of course we should. i'm voting green because they're the only party committed to scrapping it.

if we bin trident, we wouldn't have to worry about punishing the poor with austerity. instead we have a nuclear weapons system we don't need just so we can sit around the table with the big boys pretending we're still some big world power.

Given that it's only ever going to be of use in a second stike scenario is there any chance that our nuclear capable allies wouldn't back us by launching one of their nukes?

If it ever gets to a point where nuclear weapons would be called upon, the world is entirely fucked anyway. The UK doesn't need nukes - well, nobody does, but the big boys aren't ever going to give theirs up, so why not live under their nuclear umbrella and stop spunking billions of pounds of taxpayer money on pointless world-destroyers?

They don't deter any other nation, nuclear or otherwise, because nobody is going to attack the UK (except maybe Argentina under cloud cuckoo land circumstances and we don't need nukes to beat them), and they don't deter terrorists, for obvious reasons. So really they do nothing except make certain paranoid loonies sleep a little better at night and cost an inordinate amount of money.

Exactly. The nuclear deterrent exists regardless of whether we have a seat around the table in the "who's got the biggest dick?" competition.

We should acknowledge our role in the new geopolitical reality. The empire is a distant memory. The war on terror is entirely different to the Cold War.

Scrap an expensive and archaic nuclear arsenal we don't need, use the savings to pay down our debt and stop punishing the poor.

No brainer. There is no logical argument for trident.
