Lee Charnley talking to The Chronicle 20th January 2015

"Does he have any say (in transfers)?’ Yes. Does he have the final say? No he doesn’t. There’s a difference there"

There's only Carver that could agree to that.

and Garde and Tuchel and Galtier and Gourvennec

But I wonder how many of them want to be on the list?

The stumbling blocks are obvious to everyone, but I don't imagine there being much movement or compromise from Charnley. Not because he's a shrewd businessman, but simply he hasn't the wherewithal to make such decisions without Ashley. Probably why he stuck with Carver.

Keeps changing. Garde was stricken off that shortlist last week. As was Carver, Gourvennec and Galtier. Clement has joined West Brom..

Vieira and ... McClaren?

I'd have either to be fair. I think the McClaren hate is unfair. He's not Alan Pardew.

I'd prefer Viera though to be honest not because I think he would necessarily be a better choice. But simply because he'd be the more interesting choice. With Ashley around and fuck all else going on, we may as well make bold and interesting managerial appointments.

Meanwhile, this is who Sky Sports claim West Ham are talking to...

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11685/9872069/west-ham-discussing-managers-job-with-frank-de-boer-unai-emery-slaven-bilic-and-marcelo-bielsa

West Ham are discussing their vacant manager's job with four men - Frank de Boer, Unai Emery, Slaven Bilic and Marcelo Bielsa - according to Sky sources.

The Hammers are keen to appoint a new boss within the next 10 days after former manager Sam Allardyce's contract was not renewed and he left the club last week.

Ajax boss De Boer, whose side finished runners-up to PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie this season, was in contention for the Tottenham job before they hired Mauricio Pochettino last summer and has retained a desire to manage in England.

Besiktas boss Bilic, meanwhile, has an affinity with West Ham having played over 50 times for the club and is also believed to be keen to manage in the Premier League.

Unai Emery is the Sevilla head coach who has clinched two successive Europa League trophies and Argentinian Bielsa is the current boss at Marseille.

Last week, Hammers co-owner David Sullivan promised supporters there would be imminent signings and a 'big-name' manager.

He said: "I am dedicating every waking minute to recruiting the best available manager to drive our club forwards.

"It is a constantly changing landscape but we are being absolutely thorough in our search, by speaking to representatives of a number of managers and doing our own due diligence on each one.

"Given that, I am not expecting us to make an appointment for at least a week as we must do everything we can to get this appointment right."

I think McClaren would do ok and he's a safeish option but he's not going to be the starting point for anything exciting. Viera is a lot more interesting, despite his lack managerial experience he has a good standing in the game and given his history of being a winner, you'd think he'd only come if he had some sort of assurances that he'd be given the tools to have a chance at doing something here.

If there is any truth in Ashley (personally I don't believe there is) then Viera or someone like him, needs to be who we target.

Have a bit of time for McClaren for being prepared to go abroad and so on but his track record in recent jobs is pretty ordinary to say the least. Strikes me as another one who is too nice and would be better suited to going back to being a coach (but probably feels he doesn't want to after a few high profile jobs as a manager).

Think he'd be better off working somewhere like Boro; somewhere with a good youth system, modest ambition and patient owners.

So, Derby, really.

We needed the new manager to be given free reign on the football side of the club. Let Ashley & Charnley sort out the financial side fairy nuff but the new manager, even if he has to have a DoF has to be allowed the final choice on players he wants in the squad. If they can't allow that then they should go all out and let Charnley pick the team as well.

Trouble is, I can think of fucking loads of managers who're rubbish in the transfer market (thinking just cos they have cash means they must spend it) so I wouldn't want to give our limited budget to someone who could so easily be shit.

I'd rather Carr + someone like Keegan were in charge of the transfers & the coach does the coaching.

Sounds pretty certain that McClaren has the job now.

The cheapest, safest, least ambitious, and more than anything, most boring appointment we could have made. Of the 5-6 options we had genuinely had, he's got to be the worst, so of course he'll get the job. At a time when the club know how angry fans are with them, do they really think appointing McClaren is going to improve people's feelings towards them?

I knew a lass who used to do PR for Man City. Said Viera is thick as fuck and not given any responsibility at the club because he can't really do owt. Didn't really inspire me when I heard us linked with him. Though it didn't really surprise me either.

You know you're in trouble when someone from marketing thinks you're a dullard.
