Probably to the Normandy/Brittany area cos I can't be fucked with spending too much time driving. Any recommendations on towns/areas to base around would be good cheers. Would be up for splitting it one week somewhere and a second week somewhere else if that would be worthwhile. Posh people of TT, help a brother out. The only places I know in Normandy are Deauville and Honfleur. Not a huge fan of Deauville as it is a bit like Cannes without the weather. We go to Brittany every summer to a place called Benodet which is nice, but a little dull (the in laws spend August there so we are duty bound to do at least a week there). Concarneau (a few miles away) is nice and the Glenan Islands are worth a day trip. I wouldn't stay in any one place for too long though as while it is pretty, you'll probably get bored fairly quickly. The cider and crepes/galettes are very very nice though. Monkeys Fist 38669 Posted December 13, 2016 Share Posted December 13, 2016 I drove the family to Normandy last year, crossed to Dunkirk instead of Calais ( you might want to look at sailing from Portsmouth instead? Slightly longer drive through U.K. but it puts you right in Normandy). We stayed in an AirB&B just outside of Caen, which was great for our needs. Read up on The Normandy Landings, William the Conqueror and Asterix and Obelix before you go, as most of the tourist spots are focused on one/all of them. If you are driving from Calais/Dunkirk, you might want to plan a stopover in the Somme area if you're interested, since it's on the way and breaks up the drive. Looks like nowt from the outside because it's squeezed between two bars (or at least it used to be), but the food is good and it's not stupidly priced for the standard of the grub. You'll probably want to book a few days ahead to make sure of getting a table though (maybe slightly less so in December). Couple of the restaurants around the smaller bay at Playa Jablillo are nice - just your standard seafood, paella etc., but a bit quieter than the main burn further round the resort, so more pleasant for sitting with a sea view and a vat of sangria. Not sure about bars as we haven't been for a few years and the nicer little places tend to come and go (whereas the football and Irish places are eternal...), but I'll holler if we find anything new. @@Billy Whitehurst Near the end of our week now and I'm sticking with the above. Navarro still easily the best we've had, "posh" food by Costa Teguise standards (so €8 starters/€15 mains) but really very good. It's towards the west end of the town where we're based, though, and for all I know your folks' place might be right down the other end. Either way, you'll no doubt end up in the main centre of town (as such), which is basically a centro comercial or two with all the usual tourist-oriented bars and restaurants doing all the usual tourist food. Best we've tried round there is Pablo's ( ), an Italian with the same prices and grub as everywhere else but a slightly classier feel (and loads of interesting pizzas on a separate menu that they don't display outside for some reason). Another new discovery from this time (though again very much up this end of town) is Casa Felix - best tapas I've had in Costa Teguise in terms of quality vs. price vs. portion size, plus it looks like a typical holiday restaurant so it's not intimidatingly Spanish or anything. As for the local bars: Mind, being near the end of the holiday we'll almost certainly end up doing karaoke at Jesters tomorrow or the night after, so I'm in no position to talk... Unfortunately, we had to cancel last minute and ended up swapping 20C weather in Lanzarote for wind and rain in Scotland (Mrs was absolutely delighted). Many thanks for these as we'll definitely go soon as my folks are there almost half the year. My old man did briefly describe Navarro as posh and then went on to wax lyrical about how cheap the booze is in various British sounding pubs. I have used Alpine Elements and Iglu Ski, but over 10 year ago now. I've only ever booked as a package once and the transfers were an absolute nightmare (take and age to get to your resort and the return pick ups are super early and get you to the airport too early). We always book things separately and it works out pretty much the same or better. We mostly go to France and take the direct Eurostar, way better than faffing around airports but it does limit your choice of ski stations. That said, we were in Val Thorens last week from the 24th to 31st and our return got cancelled but they still managed to get us back only 1h30 late.
