When I was living over there it would take 16 hours to drive to the next city we needed to be at some days Florida has plenty in it to see and hotels are cheap. You could do Orlando/Miami/Key West/Tampa/Gainsville/Panama City. If you finish off at New Orleans it would take you through Alabama and Mississippi too I've only been to Vegas on the west coast but you could do Vegas/San Fran/LA and take in the Grand Canyon/Yosemite on the way. There's loads of weird characters there and loads of cheap places to stop in between destinations. You can visit plantation houses and listen to the descendants of the slave owners lie about how well their family treated theirs. I've been on the train from Philadelphia to New York and it was alright - better than fighting through freeway traffic anyway. There's not much to see in Philadelphia mind.
