Junior doctors' strike

Like I said before I have no in depth knowledge of the ins and outs, in fact I am ignorant in them so I will keep my council. (Think there is a saying about keeping schtum if you know nowt?)

I am 31 I had cancer, the NHS were fucking brilliant and saved my life, I didn't wait for anything and within 4 weeks had had my operation and my fist session of chemo (this was Salford Royal and The Christie).

My brother had a brain haemorrage at 30 he was in ICU and HDU for 6 months at James Cook in boro, initially we didn't think he would live though the night. I lived in Leeds at the time and my parents in Spain, I drove up as soon as I heard and was allowed to sit with him prior to his operation and afterwards until the the next morning when my parents arrived and we were all allowed total access to him. The doctors, nurses and other staff were all amazing with us. They told us straight what the odds were, what was likely to happen, they did it with professionalism but with a human touch that made us believe they cared. They shared tea and coffee with us through his pneumonia, they discussed his progress, they were councillors as well as carers and physicians.

I quite literally owe my life and my brothers to the men and women of he NHS.

Fuck anyone who point scores or deprives the NHS of what they need to provide the fantastic service they do.

That says more than any politician could,

The Christie is probably the most amazing hospital I have ever known. I lived in Manc for 10yrs and know many people that owe their lives to them.

Am working here on a phone so it's hard for me to link stuff properly. Here's one, what exactly are you disagreeing with?

https://nhsreality.wordpress.com/2015/12/31/only-52-of-doctors-completing-foundation-training-chose-to-enter-specialty-training/

It's widely accepted that nhs brain drain is a fucking massive problem, but of course CT , the impoverished 70k year taxi driver ex-sofa salesman knows better.

I was disagreeing with your alarmist post that "52% of junior doctors are fucking off". They're not.

It's 52% of a sample of graduates who have expressed an opinion that they are not going into further training. A whole shit load of different as you very well know.

CT Can you not understand that this isn't about labour or conservatives? This is about the NHS.

I admittedly know fuck all on the subject but who am inclined to believe? The fucking people who work in and have experience of the NHS..

Point scoring/money making on this subject costs peoples lives, so laugh and joke about lefty/righty debates all you like, when people are dying because they can't afford their NHS bills you can take a long look at your loving leader and ask why. Doctors and NHS staff are massively undervalued and we won't know what we have until it's gone.

Absolute fucking cretin.

"You know fuck all about it".

Then bother to learn about it before you spout off on the internet you cretin. No excuse. The strike is about money. That's why the union pulled out of talks.

"People dying because they can't pay their NHS bills".

Fuck me, walk the dog you utter moron

Okay, let's go with anecdotal evidence. Of 15 anaesthetic trainees (junior doctors) that I work with at the moment, 5 of them are pursuing or have already secured jobs abroad because of the current government proposals.

My sister-in-law is also a junior doctor. It really isn't all about the money. She would also fuck off abroad but my brother (a nurse) isn't keen.

I work with junior doctors every shift. They are already stretched beyond belief and DO work a 7-day service, as do we all, and we always have. The government are targeting the wrong people. In order to deliver a truly 7-day service, you need to run clinics, radiographers, dieticians, specialist nurses, secretaries, receptionists etc.

Why shouldn't SOME of it be about pay? I work permanent nights purely because of the unsocial hours payments. As a single mam I couldn't afford to feed myself and my child otherwise. I work every weekend and rely on that enhancement in my wages every month. Why the fuck should any of us work 8pm til 8am every Friday and Saturday night for the same wages as someone in a 9-5 desk job? Especially given the kind of stuff we're faced with every day.

But it's not really about 8pm - 8am. It's about Saturday daytime extra payments which has caused the union to strike. Both sides are fairly in agreement on extra money for nights and Sunday's.

And maybe if they save a bit of cash on a Saturday daytime there will be more to go round the adiographers, dieticians, specialist nurses, secretaries, receptionists etc.

The subject matter changes but the pattern, the arguments and CT himself all remain the same.

Hardly surprising given the left leaning politics of so many on here. But even I wouldn't suggest claiming to be ill to get a girl to abort a baby ;)

Have you any idea what it would cost to staff a fully functioning hospital on a weekend? Shaving a couple of quid off the doctors hourly rate isn't going to go anywhere near it!

@@Renton

Cos I'm good at Google ;)

"The figures are based on the career intentions in August of 7,168 young medics who completed two years of foundation training".

Edit : not sure why you've deleted that. Maybe you've actually read it rather than just copy and paste.

What's the point of this post. You think that a poll of 7000 students isn't reliable? (That's pretty near half the entire medical student output in a year by my reckoning). Edited by Renton

The point of this post is because you said it wasn't a poll then deleted your post.

Fucking hell

I'm see to have more idea why the union called the strike than most on here. Sorry if the facts don't fit in with the PR exercise being portrayed.

The spin being put on this by the Tories is nothing short of disgusting. And don't ever dare claim to know more about this than those of us trying to earn a decent wage in decent circumstances every day, night and weekend of our working lives.

I don't claim anything. I read what the union says.

I didnt, intentionally at least, delete anything. What the fuck are you talking about? A massive survey/poll /questionnaire, whatever you want to call it, shows nearly half of medical graduates won't practice their profession in the nhs. Apparently this doesn't concern you?

Sorry mate, reading your lifestyle, seeing your photo, and reading recently you've started to smoke again, you may need the nhs sooner than you think.

Yes you did delete it as soon as I corrected you.

While I'm correcting you, it DOESNT say they won't practice their profession, it says they are not intending to take FURTHER training to be GP's or consultants. Some are going straight into locum work.

Do you ever read what you post! I think you've been smoking something.

Goodnight x

I'm probably not going to make any more friends by wading back into this discussion but there is clear spin on both sides. The BMA sent a junior doctor onto BBC News this morning and all the doctor did was attack Jeremy Hunt (which no one can knock him for) and stress the need for safe working practices, an issue that I thought had been resolved? There was no mention from him at all of pay rates which the BMA statement implies is the key area of disagreement behind this strike.

Like most strikes, each side is trying to win public support and both are clearly playing the game here.

strawb's earlier post demonstrates how this subject is emotive for so many. They will automatically have sympathy for NHS staff with little knowledge of what the issues are (not a dig at you strawb).

And for the millionth fucking time I'll say that I still don't know who is right and who is wrong in all this.

Honestly?

1 side is using this pay/hours dispute to further the privatisation of the NHS

1 side is using this pay/hours dispute to pay doctors a wage reflective of their value/give doctors a work-life balance that the majority of us enjoy.

Pretty sure what side I'm on.

Oh and I'm curious to know which website CT gets his arguments from, because they're sure as shit not his.

I think that's an incredible over-simplification of matters. The idea that this is being done in order to set the NHS up to fail is fanciful. Not impossible but incredibly unlikely IMO. Like CT supports Tory actions no matter how idiotic or cruel they are, there are many on the other side who will automatically call the government cunts for any and all actions they take. The truth is somewhere in between.

I think this summary below shows that the whole thing is actually confusing (and yes it's from the Torygraph):

  • There is an enormous strength of feeling among junior doctors. People feel used, burned out, ill-treated. They are showing it.
  • But some patients, and even some senior doctors, are even angrier. Although polls show most of the general public back the strike, I'd say my inbox has been pretty evenly split between those in favour and those who think it is dangerous, arrogant, and wrong.
  • Jeremy Hunt frames this strike as the unions attempting to obstruct his democratically-mandated seven-day NHS. But it's not clear how this contract will actually help the seven-day NHS come into being. Certainly it isn't enough on its own. Instead, it may merely be a way of cutting costs.
  • It is also not at all clear how the new contract will endanger patient safety, or lead to doctors being more tired than they are now, even though many doctors say this.
  • The key sticking point for the BMA is Saturday pay. But doctors themselves feel that this strike is about far more than that. Like a rolling stone, it has gathered with it all manner of other considerations – about the pressure on A&E, the hospital funding crisis, the hours doctors work, and the way they feel they're being treated.
