No thread on this topic, despite some discussion in the phones and Uber threads.

 

Recent news is that California has said you will not need a driving license to use one..

 

 

 

California’s department of motor vehicles said late on Friday the most advanced self-driving cars will no longer be required to have a licensed driver, if federal officials deem them safe enough.

 

The regulator released a revision of draft regulations that opened a pathway for the public to access self-driving cars, prototypes of which automakers and tech companies are testing.

 

The redrafted regulations will be the subject of a public hearing on 19 October, in Sacramento.

 

The California DMV has been wrestling for several years with how to oversee the emerging technology. In December, the agency released an initial draft of self-driving car regulations that required a licensed driver in any self-driving vehicle.

 

The automotive and tech industries reacted with great disappointment, as the ultimate vision of many companies is a car with no steering wheel or pedals. That approach is based on the argument that humans are not very good at driving, and cannot be relied on as a back-up to a car that typically drives itself.

 

The DMV’s new document coincides with the release last week of a 112-page federal proposal under which any self-driving car should pass a 15-point safety assessment before the public can use it.

 

Among other things, the safety assessment asks automakers to document how the car detects and avoids objects and pedestrians; how hardened it is against cyber-attacks; and how its back-up systems will cope should the software fail.

 

In incorporating the federal approach, California dropped a proposal that a third-party company certify the safety of self-driving cars.

 

The new draft regulations released on Friday include several new provisions. Among them is wording that would prohibit advertising vehicles with lower levels of automation – such as Tesla Motors’ Autopilot, which on divided highways can keep a car in its lane, brake and accelerate on the understanding that a person is paying attention all the time – from being advertised as “autonomous” or “self-driving”.

 

The company that stands to gain the most from the state’s embrace of cars without a wheel or pedals is Alphabet, where the Google self-driving car project envisions cars that allow no human control other than a start and emergency stop button.

 

A spokesman for the Google self-driving car project did not have a comment on the changes to the proposed regulations.

it would be a bit like having a personal chauffeur for when you need a left home but you're over the limit. could just kick back and watch TV in the car on the way home from a boozer or whatever. the technology has got to be infallible mind. not sure it's there yet.

Impressive, sure, but would you have one over a car that you can actually drive?

 

Absolutely.  I enjoy putting my foot down and that as much as the next man, but far happier reading something.

 

In the long run we'll rent our cars like we do our music and videos, whether by subscription or by trip.  No parking spaces needed at home or at the shops.  No parking tickets.   No petrol stations.  I'd expect human driven cars to be outlawed when they keep crashing into autonomous vehicles with a far superior safety record.

I'd imagine you'd have the ability to take control.

 

Only in the short term I think.  The Google vehicles only have a start and stop button.

 

The one thing I don't like about them is the potential for hacking.  Terrifying thought that nefarious parties cause every car in a country to crash at high speed.

I imagine the problem would be there is going to a mix of driverless and traditional cars, if everyone had driverless then the programming would be relatively simple. But programming a car to react to unpredictable self drivers on the road would be incredibly difficult.

 

And fucking cyclists.

Aye, it'll be like getting the gypsies off the motorways in their horse and traps. The holdouts will spoil it for all future looking educated peoples.

What about accountability when they inevitably do kill? Can't blame the owner can you?

 

That's why the companies making them will have safety paramount in mind and won't take any chances.  The law suits would kill them off in months if they went ahead with an unsafe product.

The trouble they are having with discussions with regulator is in being able to pre-specify the moral actions of the vehicle when in danger. So, if the car has to take evasive action to avoid running over a group of 5 people but to do so the only action it can take is to swerve and run over a child, how should the programmers incorporate the pre-determined choice into the software algorithm?

But seriously this is the first phase of the habitat area protocols. These cars will have a tiny range and keep you on the farm. It will only be a matter of time before people wanting to drive themselves will be seen as psychopaths or summink.

 

You'll say, 'Paris'!  And car will say No!
