What are your thoughts on SAFC, the widespread chanting in support of a player charged with touching a minor, and the pervading chip they have on their shoulder about generally performing to a level far beneath ours in terms of club stature?

Let's see if we can find some common ground.

At the time he wasn't convicted so you can't criticise them for that. I don't know about their chip. I don't take much notice of them when they are talking about Sunderland. Based on their stadium, they should be in the Premier League, but if I had the choice, I'd have them in the lowest league possible. I hope they don't get promoted, but I'm expecting them to. I just hope we get our sh.t together (staying up and improving the squad) before we meet them again (hopefully won't, but probably will sometime).

Wasn't the chant something like 'he fucks who he wants'? I think we can criticise them for that. Although I guess it's doubtful that too many of them really believed that the club would take on the number of abhorrent actions that it did, surrounding that situation.

Based on their stadium alone, I agree. Based on their 10-15 previous seasons, I think lower championship is about right.

They don't seem to share your confidence on their promotion anymore, but I expected them to go up too. Although I expected them to be cruising first, so who knows.

It's irrelevant what we do under Ashley, it's a blip in our existence rather than a reflection of the club.

I’ll never accept that stupid fucking “he wasn’t convicted so they were fine to act how they did” it’s utter nonsense. Iirc he was out on bail while the CPS was gathering evidence, also no one here is saying the mackems should have been booing him but as Rayvin said they chanted “he fucks who he wants” and gave him over the top vocal support. What they did was abhorrent.

Also that stadium is a fucking joke, PL standard  Aye keep cracking them. It’s a soulless, flat pack stadium surrounded by nothing, the facilities inside are on par with koko’s in North Shields. It’s a League One club playing in a championship standard stadium with a fan base that quite happily backed a sex offender.

I didn't know people were chanting that and I think it's disgusting if they were. Every club have these types of fans who take it too far. I've never been to their stadium and never intend to.

You need to do a bit more research next time if you’re going to pretend you support NUFC. Not here though, that ship has sailed

Research on what? Still trying to run with that one? The only stadiums I've been to are St James' Park and Gateshead's (for non related football events). The last game I went to was a one during the Bobby Robson era.

That (ie total lack of interest in / commitment to the club) coupled with almost all your posts (prior to the recent ones filled with mock indignation at least) being a defence of an incredibly inept owner doesn’t really make any sense. Unless of course you’re just here on the wind-up. Which you obviously are and not only that, everyone sussed you almost instantly. Do you actually think you’re being clever or cunning or something?

I could have seen the argument for Ashley some years back when it was being touted as a possible sensible option following the 'Arsenal' model, but the way he operates as it stands makes no sense whatsoever. He could spend £20-30m now, with resale value i might add, or risk losing £100m next year. And this is the second time he's gambled like this, and the first time the gamble failed.

It's just fucking stupid. Plenty of other teams are making an effort to compete, what possible argument can there be in favour of a football club that doesnt even try.

I do have a lot of interest in the club. I didn't realise that not going to the stadium to watch the club invalidates my support. I agree we have an inept owner, but I just have different thoughts on how to deal with this. Sometimes its best to accept situations than make them worse by protesting. I think we can still be successful under Ashley and sometimes its better the devil you know, although to a point.

How can we be successful under him though? He flattens everything he lands on both figuratively and literally.

By bringing in decent players instead of flops / making bad choices (Llambias / Wise and co). If we had bought a better striker than Mitrovic, we would not have been relegated. 2 or 3 decent players would do wonders. We seem to do business right on the last day. This is what I'm clinging on to.

Ah, so what you’re saying is that because Ashley has made loads of mistakes in the past and has shown no evidence of changing the way he operates, even after having a world class manager land in his lap, you think he can be a success going forward because the transfer window doesn’t close for another 3 days? Thanks for clearing that up

We are never going to get a better striker than Mitro because he won't spend more than £15m on anyone

Also don't recall Mitro being the main problem that season...
