I fully expect us to lose to Belgium. They have some world class players. We have Jake Livermore and Jordan Henderson pulling the strings in midfield. We couldn’t even beat Iceland.

Belgium’s main issue is at times they look like a team of individuals, well that and the fact Roberto Martinez is their manager. Not that I hold much hope of England getting a result but at least Southgate does seem to have them playing as some sort of team.

Still, as you mention he favours a central midfield that completely wastes any chance for quick attacks which is what an England side with the likes of Ligaard, Alli, Sterling, Kane, Vardy, and Rashford should be focusing on. While it’ll never happen bringing Jonjo as a plan B really is a bit of a non-brainer since he offers something actually different from all of the sideways passers he will fill CM with.

But she begins a line in her second par with the word moreover, ugh

I do like this line though

In a world of beige central midfielders specialising in neat, short, tidy sideways manoeuvres, his ability to really hurt opponents provides a welcome splash of shocking pink.

Really? I always thought it was somewhere between tabloid and broadsheet. I don't really think she's good enough to write for them, not when she has to stand up alongside people like Ronay. That said, the other 'regional' football reporters are about the same level.

her writing style is so pompous

Yeah, it's really affected. That piece is actually not too bad though, not just the subject matter but the style itself is more reserved than usual. I don't actually mind reading stuff that's stylistically a bit pretentious if the writer can carry it off but her stuff is usually unreadable.

Asked about possible selection for England, Shelvey said: "I would love to go to the World Cup. It would be my dream but it's not down to me, that decision lies with Gareth Southgate."

It’s mental having a side with pace of Sterling, Lingaard, Kane, and Alli up top and not wanting to bring a bloke that could lay on some great balls to them in favour of three players that would wince at the thought of attempting a pass over 8 yards. He’d be a great option in a game where the team is set up to play on the counter, or a 2nd option to if we are dominating possession but can’t break down a team sitting deep.

He has an amazing passing range. What might go against him is that he’s neither an attacking nor defensive midfielder. So isn’t easy to pigeonhole for the team.

I think (and perhaps Southgate agrees) that he wouldn't be as effective as international sides tend to sit a bit deeper than ones in the Premier League and this would be even more the case if England were chasing a game. I still think it's crackers he can't even get into the squad given the other options though
