British Views on Evolution

The next time anyone says education in this country is anywhere near okay then quote this - obviously its twisted by the usual religion influence but I wouldn't be more disgusted if the same proportions insisted 2+2=5 or the Battle of Hastings was in 1065. This needs action imo.

Of course the fact that the idiot in No 10 defended Vardy's brainwashing academies doesn't help.

Whilst I went to a Catholic school, we were taught the theory of Evolution. Saying that, we then spent the same amount of time in RE being told some invisible force (soopafan tbh) clicked his fingers one day when he was bored.

Luckily most of us were intelligent enough to decide which one was the most plausible. I mean, we were once monkeys? What a load of shite.

Evolution is science and should be taught there.

ID/Creationism is religion and should be taught there.

Simple isn't it?

There is no evidence for ID/creationism other then this complexity thing but lets be honest here 6 or so billion years. Seems fairly plausable to me that some very complex thing could evolve over that time period....

i'M ALWAYS A BIT SUSPICOUS OF THESE SORT OF REPORTS - WHEN i WAS A KID WE'D SAY OWT TO STUPID PEOPLE WHO ASKED US THIS SORT OF QUESTION

I THINK IF YOU OFFERED THEM A QUID FOR EACH RIGHT ANSWER THE RESULTS WOULD BE VERY DIFFERENT

sorry about the caps button......................

Let's be honest, the majority of the British public are pretty ignorant about all things scientific anyway. However, according to that article, it may be something that is improving rather than worsening, as it's older folk who tend not to believe in evolution:

Participants over 55 were less likely to choose evolution over other groups.

Alot of truth in that and don't forget the media who are just as bad. Prime example being MMR, one bloke said there was a link to autism, thousand of scientists and doctors said otherwise and pointed to the evidence and explained that diseases previously erradictaed would return, but parents ("helped" by the media) panicked as is the norm and left the children at risk and it turns out the bloke was a lying imbecile anyway!

And then "frankenstein foods" the medias favourite term for genetically modified crops a subject about which they know absolutely fuck all but feel free to ruin any chance of looking into it and testing it sensibly under controlled conditons by people who actually know what they're doing.

I agree entirely.

Coincidentally, there's a documentary tonight on intelligent design (Horizon, BBC 2, 9pm) that sounds worth watching. I think it deals with the issue of faith schools too.

trouble is, it's not the people on this board (or those people we socialise with off in the real world) that need convincing, it's the knuckle draggers that corrupt and poison generation after generation of idiot.

We can congratulate ourselves on being enlightened and broad minded, but at the end of the day, we were never really at risk of buying into voodoo hoodoo bullshit, in what ever form, be it Christianity, Islam or Paganism.

Did anyone watch this then? Basically it seems the American far right christian evangelical nut brigade are a bit peeved that the constitution forbids them from teaching religious dogma such as creationism in state schools, so they have invented a "scientific" theory called intelligent design. Trouble is, it has no evidence whatsoever to support it, and answers precisely no questions at all.

I think every decent thinking American owes it to themselves to resist these loony tunes that are taking over their country. In this day and age, quite frankly it's ridiculous, and also very worrying for the rest of us.

I recorded Horizon last night to watch at the weekend.

ID is a classic - "My tiny brain can't comprehend the timeframes involved with evoloution and is blind to all the evidence so when I see something as complicated as an eye God MUST have designed it".

Ironically the anatomical structure of the eye that the creationists have long held as proof that evolution is impossible, is strong evidence in favour of evolution. It is wired "back to front" in such a way that it could only have evolved - unless the designer was particularly incompetent or was deliberately trying to fool us.

I think the ID crew have twigged on to this now, so they are desperately scouring nature to find other examples of "complex irreducibility", without much success. But this is the only evidence they can get to back their "theory".

Evolution should be taught in schools.

Religion should be taught in schools.

It's quite simple really - small-minded people just wiping off religion like that, then adopting evolution as "truth" and that religious theories are a load of rubbish. Doesn't seem stupid to me God creating the universe, and giving it freedom to allow evolution. Looks like some people ought to grow up...

Theres no such thing as "religious theories" - thats the point - its all "beliefs" that you have to take on without question.

If you teach religion then you have to teach them all as they are all as equally as "valid" as each other - it would leave no room for anything else in the curriculum.

"Some people need to grow up"

Some people need to escape brainwashing and think.

BTW Evolution is as much "truth" as the earth orbiting the sun or the roman occupation of Britain - "theories" supported my masses of evidence.

Personally, I don't agree that religion should be taught in state schools at all, which particualr one do you advocate?

But anyway, that's besides the point, what we're discussing here is what should be taught in SCIENCE lessons. Do you believe a theory based on no evidence at all and based on religious dogma, not to mention being heavily backed (and financially supported) by evangelical christian groups should be taught in Science lessons?

Science? No. Evolution should be taught in science lessons definitely, as it is a logical theory - though nobody can whine about religion being taught if evolution is taught as fact. Religion is fine to be taught in religious studies, and even that is not taught as fact. It is generally in secondary school focussing on morals, views, beliefs etc, not creationism and how we managed to get here.

Spot someone who didn't go to a catholic school which I assume will also be true of all the wonderful new faith schools of other colours - we were informed (in "reasonable" terms) that the bible was 100% the word of god and therefore indisputable.

We also were taught proper history/science but nobody had the sense or courage to dispute the contradictions.

So basically you're saying keep the Status quo then - fine, I can live with that.

I would say though that to all intents and purposes evolution is a fact, as NJS has pointed out. Tough shit if this contradicts the beliefs of the loony creationists. This isn't being small minded by the way - "theories" that are backed by huge amounts of evidence are usually considered fact, aren't they? And I don't believe there is any value in "teaching" morals in religious education classes.
