Toonraider, I remember you mentioning a while ago that your husband is involved in motor racing but I can't remember what category it is.

Over the last year I've been building a Subaru for hillclimbing and rallycross and I'm about a couple of hours away from running the new engine in but everytime I go to bolt on that last piece, something else isn't quite right!

Does he suffer the same thing or is it all off the shelf, piece of piss as they say?

Hi sammy.

Yes hubby races national hot rods on the larger ovals. Hednesford, Ipswich, Ringwood etc.

Because its such an expensive sport its quite a struggle to keep up with the 'big boys' who have good sponsorship and/or 'daddys' who own large firms.

Luckily if i say so myself, hubby is very clever and does everything himself. He designs his own cars, builds the chassis, makes moulds and from them makes his own panels from kevlar/fibre glass. He builds his own race engines, they cost around £10,000-£15,000 from Anderson (or a likewise engine suppplier) ready to go on the button..but by buying his own engine parts and building them himself ours has probably cost around £5,000 plus lots of time! Have to say his engines have always been pretty sweet and never had a problem, which is such a great smug feeling when you see the top guys break down with an engine blow up yet again :icon_lol:

We have been around hillclimbing, hubby helped a mate build a clio for that, though i gotta say...how boring is hillclimb!!? :steamtrain: (sorry) but much prefer the fast, technical national hot rod racing! (supposed to be non contact, but its not)!

Rallycross looks great though, you may have heard of Barry Squib (sp) (he lives just up the road from us)

Have a feeling your're taking the mickey slightly out of me :P<_< cos these things are expensive and surely you wouldnt tackle a race engine build unless you seriously knw what your're doing?

Love subaru's by the way!

Good luck with your racing!

No I'm not taking the mickey, after school I completed an apprenticeship in plant mechanics, heavy machinery/trucks/earthmoving equipment but it was more an opportunity to get a trade because the city I was living in was in recession. Since going back to university and ending up in television I specialise in producing motor racing/automotive productions and was very involved in producing rallying programs - hence the return to mechanics and building my own car (which is the same as the first Subaru Possum Bourne rallied in the late 80s).

So no I'm not taking the piss - just frustrated at the moment because all I want to do is get the thing out of the garage and I though you might have a word of wisdom.

As for hill climbs being boring, well it is a low cost but competitive motor sport and the events here are quite challenging, more like a tarmac rally stage up a hill.

hillclimbing is very popular down here, our mate hillclimbs what was originally a 1966 johnny walker special it had a fireblade engine in it. He loved it! He used to sit on the line waiting for the go with a complete look of fear on his face, but it gave him such a blast!! :scare: The thing was so fast!

Oddicombe hillclimb in torquay is very well known. Its so steep and twisty, you'll have to try it out! I wasnt putting your chosen sport down, i just find it boring to watch i guess, as its not really a spectator sport...but im sure its exciting for the driver and thrilling to race against the clock.

I understand when you say about getting frustrated with trying to get your car sorted...there always seems to be more problems just when you think your're getting there. At the moment hubby (brian) is preparing the car for the start of our racing again in March...a overhaul and new braking system. Plus we've bought a new larger van for towing, so thats being rebuilt and turned into a camper.

With the engines, Brian is so experienced, being a fully qualified motor bike mechanic by trade...he is so used to building large motor bikes engines over the years...theres nothing he doesnt know. What i've noticed is, he's very very thorough, very patient and meticulous (not to say fussy) when he's putting one together...He pays attention to every detail. He even knows whats wrong with an engine just by listening, he's normally right too! :scare::icon_lol: So i'd say take care, dont rush things and ask for advice if your're not too sure.

Any specific problems, please PM me, i can always ask bri :scare: (though have to warn you, he hates subaru's, he says they sound so flat) !! <_<

Heres the racing we do.
