That's one of the problems when signing Asian and African players who play for their National team.

AFCON moved to be in July a couple of years ago.

Losing Ki is a blow though.

Just had a look at the details and he could be gone for fucking ages!

Tournament starts on the 5th of Jan and he can be called up 15 days before that (we're in negotiations with the SKFA on that front) their last group game is the 16th of January and the final is the 1st of February.

So we're losing our best performing midfielder for our busiest period of the season.

Balls.

He could potentially miss 8/9 premiership games:o

Has he not retired from internationals?

He should retire from internationals now, shouldn't he? I love my country, but I'd be pissed if an important Newcastle squad player left for 8/9 games to play for Canada.  Well, except for David Edgar.

Is Muto involved, as well?  Not that he has had much game time recently.

He's not been in the squad for Japan since June, doesn't look like hes one who always gets in.

If Rafa is wanting players in they need to be in early as the squad is paper thin already, we know this won't happen though.

When asked about how the transfer planning for January is going, worryingly the manager replied that no targets are yet being pursued because as yet he still has no idea of what budget, if any, he will have to spend.

Ki came off in the 58 minute of the opening game of the Asia Cup with a hamstring injury. He is now on his way back to Newcastle as he's no longer required for the last 16 for South Korea
