Paddling pool obviously not doing the business

Who needs sufficient facilities nowadays when you can just spunk the money on new players. Bricks don’t score goals. Ok, neither do 40m strikers...

Funny how our injury record either side of Benitez has been a total embarrassment. Probably a total coincidence.

Players just need to harden up

and play through these soft tissue injuries, just like our old skool managers did in their day

We'll be comfortably beaten. Not saying it'll be a humping but I could see them missing more chances than us and still edging it. If they've got their goalscoring boots on....0-3. 1-2 if they're fannying about and are feeling the games.

They had their goalscoring boots on.

Im undecided whether as the players are so shit or that they arent trained correctly.

20-30% possession every week is abysmal.

Possession figures are largely irrelevant. You don’t need 50% of the ball to win the game. What you do need is a good plan to score when you have your 30% possession and to not concede the rest of the time.

Rafa knew we didn’t have the players for possession based football and so brought in a system where we were comfortable not having the ball.

Bruce has taken that system and pretty much said ‘do what you were told last year’. The problem is that two of our front three weren’t here last year so as a unit they’ve haven’t bonded. The three at the back started off well but you can see over time that they’re losing muscle memory from Rafa’s time here and it’s going to get worse.

We rode our luck massively in November and December and now we’re going to see it even out.

My question was though. Are the players so shit they cant improve on possession? if you have more of the ball you're likely to create more chances so i dont buy into your theory.

Just look at Brighton. They've completely changed their philosophy and mentality from a similar defensive setup to a possession and more exciting style. This is clearly the manager as their personnel hasnt changed dramatically.

Yeah but look at how we played in the second half of last season.

Look at Man U’s win rate when they have over/under 50% of the ball.

Possession in and of itself doesn’t always give you the best chance of winning. It has certainly been a conscious effort to sit back in games and counter when we can and that inevitably involves having less possession.

Rafas tactics were essentially just to not give any chances away and nick one when we could. You need to be exceptionally well drilled to pull this off and have players capable of being ruthless in front of goal.

Brighton are two points worse off than they were this time last season ;)

Thats the small picture. They arent watching turgid football and they'll be fine this season in terms of relegation.  I assume Potter will then want get more players in that suit the system.

They outclassed us at St James's

Of the nine matches played yesterday in only two of them did the team with the majority of possession actually win the game.

There wont be much in a 55-45  or even a 60-40 game but when you are in the 20-30% possession your chances of creating goal scoring opportunities become slimmer and slimmer. We have the lowest possession statistics in the PL and we've been riding our luck  up until the Xmas period.

Yesterday exposed the lack of physical fitness.

20-30% isn’t ideal of course, I’m not arguing that it is but we don’t have a team capable of playing possession based football. So it’s partly tactics and partly the standard of player we have.

Villa won yesterday with 38%, Southampton 41%, Watford 36% and West Ham 43%. So it’s obviously not ideal to gift your opponents 77% of the ball as we did yesterday but neither is it necessary to have most of the ball.

There’s a fair chance the manager isn’t very good I reckon
