I'm defo not talking about burying your head. I'm talking about checking in once a day and the press conference seems the obvious time cos that is when substantive changes/announcements will be made. Refreshing twitter or following live blogs is gonna make people ill.

And btw don't stop posting on here. Especially if it's a help to you.

Cheers. Empty gesture anyway. I'll be wfh most the time for the foreseeable future, can't give up here. I am trying to be more positive,  its hard for all of us, I know. I'm aware of some real tragedies already. I actually posted one and then deleted straight away because i think this place is too identifiable and the person concerned might not want it public. I think keeping our mental health through this might be harder than keeping our physical health.

So my mother has an underlying health condition that makes her high risk and is full on taking this seriously. She's social distancing inside the house from anyone who visits, has bought chickens so that she doesn't have to go to the shops for eggs, and is growing all different kinds of vegetables :D

I thought she was being a bit over the top to begin with but given what's going on with supermarkets I no longer think that.

I think people are a greater problem than the actual virus tbh. The government has actually impressed me in the past week after being dismal initially, but they need to force people to take this seriously.

I also don't share Rentons view that we'll get a socialist utopia out of this. People will just try to forget about it IMO.

People have been sent home from work if they're in a vulnerable category, (not including the work from home mob who are already gone), place going to be struggling for skills across the site and I've had an uncomfortable night and feel a bit groggy, bunged up and generally shit. Would have no choice but to go in on Monday as I will only get paid SSP as I don't think it's the Corona at the minute. If it was I'd be on full pay for two weeks. Great. <_<

I don't think that's going to be an option given the scale of this. Definitely I dont assume we will any form of utopia, things may get far, far worse. But things will definitely change. The neoliberal paradigm is dead. ;)

They’ll probably use this as the excuse to usher in another decade of austerity.

That’s what I was thinking.

They’ll have a hard job doing that when they’re hanging by their heels in Parliament Square

I hope you're right  given the positive impact this has had on climate change, there are indeed things to learn from it.

But whether your average person has appreciated this yet idk. I think it needs to get a lot worse first.

This is where I am. With the possible benefit that home working will become far more mainstream.

Oosh wouldn't want to be in your spot. What's the craic?

I think the only appropriate word at the moment is ‘surreal’ 😕 It’s not made itself visible up here yet like it has in London which is now at full capacity for Covid patients on ventilation in Intensive Care. My place is eerily peaceful with an underlying sense of foreboding doom. We know it’s going to come but we just don’t know when and we can have as many meetings, flowcharts and hastily-thrown-together guidelines as you like but when the shit hits the fan we’re just going to do what we can with what we’ve got and hope to fuck that it’s enough. We’re busy turning one of our theatre recovery rooms into a makeshift ITU for when they’re at capacity and anaesthetic staff will need to staff it as we postpone routine surgery. I have a constant sickly feeling in the pit of my stomach and I’m shitting myself. Which is unfortunate given the bog roll situation.

I may have also lost my shit with a few people and ranted this morning:

‘As a friend drove through Newcastle last night they reported back that the bars and pubs were absolutely heaving with people. I know of at least 2 places that were having “final fling” nights in their pub. The pubs I passed on my way to work were full at 7pm. “One last pint!” “Best go out while we can!” “Ahhh I’m fine man, it’s being blown out of all proportion!”

Did you have a good night? Bit tender this morning? Well I hope that pint was worth it. In a couple of weeks time when someone you love is battling for their life on a ventilator, being given 24/7 care by my colleagues in a department that will have to spill over into a makeshift Intensive Care Unit in the back of Recovery, and you’re praying to a God you don’t even believe in; I hope to the same God that it was truly worth it. And if they don’t win that battle, and they become another statistic in this horrendous nightmare that hasn’t even scratched the surface for us here in the North East, don’t DARE suggest that we should’ve done more to help them. You selfish pricks.’

Added to that, some of the treatment nurses are getting from members of the public has been disgraceful. Spat at and called disease carriers according to the independent...

I wish I could add more likes to this post. People are arseholes. I do support a lot of what the government has done but it's been too late. Announcing a shut down of pubs on a Friday night was fucking insane.

Look back to the start of this thread, which was just a few weeks ago. I said hundreds of thousands would die and we'd face economic collapse. That was based on what had happened elsewhere, and simple maths. You were in complete denial. Exactly a week ago, myself and others warned the government's strategy was catastrophic. For that i was called a fanny, amd randomly abused by one poster. You told me to log off. But we were right.

Bet you’re a right laugh at parties!

FWIW I think everyone on here is acutely aware of the seriousness of this by now. Constantly reminding people about it doesn’t help though. The time for arguing who was right and who was wrong is well past, and finger pointing at the government will no doubt be done for years to come in the aftermath of this clusterfuck when we have a multinational investigation into how this all happened, and how we prevent it from happening again

What we need currently is calm, sensible leadership. At home, at work, on here and in government.

Agreed. Who's going to be leader here?

We’re a football based message board. Not the fucking COBRA committee.

Does feel like we have a higher calling on here sometimes though

Genuinely think you could form the best government we've had in years using posters from this forum.
