Both my kids’ schools have made it fairly clear not to expect them to open before summer.

I can see conflict between the govt. and teaching unions on its way.

Some of the councils are now saying they won't open schools on 1 June (Liverpool and Hartlepool I know have done it so far).  Can see this spreading to other councils too and the unions are advising not opening, and now the BMA are backing the unions too.

It's clearly not safe to be asking schools to reopen - Hancock yesterday stood at the press conference and said the infection rate had gone from a range of 0.5-0.9 to 0.7-1.0. When quizzed on how old the data was, he had to admit that R data is two weeks old.  So two weeks ago, the rate of infection started to rise, and yet they want kids to return to school two weeks from now, at which point they will barely know what the rate of infection was today.  They are 100% playing games with people's lives.

Btw Gavin Williamson.  What the fuck is that?  The drip's drip.  The Education Secretary who can't be bothered to pronounce the word "the" properly.  "Vuh most important thing for children is that they return to education."  He can do a "th" perfectly well in other words, he sounds like he's doing baby talk in the fucking House of Commons ffs. This shitshow should cost him another job.

Well they have had their powers eroded by successive governments. That’s because back in the 70s when they were ruining everything levels of inequality were the lowest they’ve ever been in this country

If it’s so important that kids return to school, why are the kids whose education is at the least crucial stage the ones supposed to be going back first? We both know the answer is likely to be so the schools can babysit so parents can get back to work.

Also, the fact the infection rate has gone up, and the data is two weeks old, just makes the decision to relax the restrictions even worse than it appeared at the time. As I have mentioned previously, even if they were being honest and coming out and saying the reasons behind it are purely economic, even then it would likely be a failure. Given that we’ll likely see the infection rate climb above 1 and tighter restrictions being reintroduced with a greater economic impact. It’s hard to spot where the evil ends and the incompetence starts with this lot

I don't think the risk benefit ratio justifies the return of kids for a few weeks before the summer. It being reception, years 1 and 6 only, it wouldn't help many parents return to work either.

But what happens in September? Do we continue keeping kids off school then if this thing is still rumbling on in the background? This is a fucking nightmare, kids need school. I'm glad mine are going tbh, for the social aspect. The numbers are low so social distancing is happening,  to an extent. They enjoy and benefit from it.

It’ll be a nightmare because we’ll have a summer of muddled, mixed messages where the opportunity to get the virus relatively under control will have been lost

Like anything covid related it needs to be led by science. What’s the rate of transmission from children? What has happened in countries that have reopened schools? I don’t know the answers but the government need to clearly illustrate why it’s safe to send kids back to school before they demand it.

There's no way social distancing is going to be happening in schools. You need every single kid in the class to i) get what social distancing is all about and ii) observe it.  Then you need spaces that are big enough to make it happen - they were showing a head teacher on the BBC earlier showing her school, and she was measuring walkways and they weren't even 2m wide.  Then you need kids to be washing their hands fastidiously and at regular intervals.  And even then if one of them has it, it's gonna be all over all the surfaces in no time.

The same head was looking at all the things that could transmit the virus - pens, pencils, cuddly toys, lego pieces, basically everything in that room is a potential conduit for the disease.  She made the point that if they remove all this stuff from the room, what are they actually providing in terms of development?  They're just being made to provide free childcare.

Spare a thought for the civil servants whose job it is to write the guidance policy. I.e. having to articulate all the things the jokers in charge haven’t even considered

They actively advertise legal representation as a membership benefit, though.

You should have chinned 5 of your Mexican Viagras and stormed in there and represented yourself.

Shouting "ERECTION!" instead of objection, and pointing at your piece.

These issues will be true of the continent too. Its unavoidable. Which is why I think you need to get the prevalence down to low levels and get track and tracing working. Honestly I'm not optimistic we can achieve that here. Otoh, If you dont get kids back by September I think the damage to them will be irreversible in many cases. Hone schooling requires massive effort and isn't compatible with wfh.

On the press conference yesterday, someone asked a question about timeliness of data. Hancock admitted that the data on R is two weeks out of date, but that a new ONS survey that they are running is hoped to be able to make that R data more timely.  There's also the track and trace stuff, for which they've admitted they've only appointed 1,500 of the 18,000 needed to run the process.

Now why the fuck would you not wait until both of the above have been achieved - your R data is more timely, and your track and trace is ready to go - before sending people back to work and school?  You're basically just winging it. It's unforgivable.

I notice the Tories are suddenly desperate to pack the HoC again too - as Marina Hyde points out, the overriding reason for this is because in a quiet HoC Johnson is getting murdered by Starmer's forensic questioning.

Aye well, we're canny fucked aren't we? People are saying now is not the time to dissect the mistakes of January, February, March are missing the point imo. These cunts will fuck up our future just as sure as they fucked up the past. I'm genuinely afraid of where we are heading. Sometimes wish it was just me and the wife to worry about without adding young kids into the equation. What a time to be alive.

Off to the beach now to windmill the fuckers who have driven here.

I must admit, I'm pleased to not have kids to worry about at the best of times, but right now it must give you a lot to think about.

Just got my face masks delivery now. Right rip off but it's going to be fun going shopping looking like Dick Turpin from now on.

I thought about face masks but I actually think my beauty might be something of a vaccine. If nothing else it'll boost female immunity.
