Ten-men Newcastle made it two wins out of two with victory over Aston Villa in an incident-packed match.

The visitors took the lead when Shola Ameobi picked up a pass from Alan Shearer to slide the ball under keeper Thomas Sorensen.

Villa equalised when Luke Young nipped in to head past Shay Given.

Celestine Babayaro was sent off in the second half for a tackle on Villa's Milan Baros, but the subsequent penalty was saved from Baros by Given.

Thought the beeb would mention something about N'Zogbia's goal. Also, when did Luke Young sign for Villa?

More quality reporting in the same match report:

Their promising French teenager, N'Zogbia, put his side back in front when he picked up the pieces after Solano's shot was brilliantly saved by Solano.

Match report from the Observer:

Solano maintains Toon revival

Stuart James

Sunday February 12, 2006

The Observer

A ground that witnessed the final match of Bobby Robson's Newcastle reign might well have been graced by the next Newcastle manager. Sven-Goran Eriksson, watching from the stands, cast a shadow over proceedings though his presence was not enough to unsettle Glenn Roeder, who masterminded a second successive victory in the most trying of circumstances.

Having dominated the opening 45 minutes, Newcastle spent almost the entire second half desperately seeking to hold on to their lead after Celestine Babayaro was controversially dismissed. The Newcastle defender was shown a red card after he felled Milan Baros in the area, though the Villa striker was denied when Shay Given saved from the spot; the first of several fine saves that kept the home side at bay.

Not since a thumping 4-1 victory at West Ham in December had Newcastle scored on their travels in the Premiership, though that memory had been banished within 78 seconds here. Villa, who were seeking to build on a run that has brought one defeat in 10 matches, were caught cold as Shola Ameobi pilfered an early lead.

The breakthrough set the tone for a bright, incisive opening 45 minutes from Newcastle that should have yielded more than a slender advantage at the interval. With Nolberto Solano shimmering menacingly on the right flank and Alan Shearer proving that he is a reliable provider as well as a potent goalscorer, the visitors carried the much greater threat against a Villa side disjointed by the loss of key personnel.

With Gavin McCann suspended, Steven Davis injured and James Milner, on loan from Newcastle, ineligible, David O'Leary was forced to make three changes to his starting XI. Peter Whittingham, who has not started since August, and Craig Gardner, making his full debut, formed a homegrown midfield that also included Lee Hendrie and Gareth Barry.

That quartet would have included Solano up until August, but the Peruvian could not resist the opportunity to return to St James' Park. As Villa's top-scorer last season, the home fans hardly required a reminder of his talents, though he duly obliged all the same, setting up the chance for Charles N'Zogbia to plunder Newcastle's second goal, and playing a part in the fluent passing move that carved Ameobi's opener.

The 31-year-old rapped a firm pass into the feet of Shearer who, having adroitly spotted the run of Ameobi, played a perfectly weighted first-time pass into the Newcastle striker's path. Thomas Sorensen came off his line to narrow the angle, though the Villa keeper's presence was not enough to prevent Ameobi from steering a low shot into the far corner.

Newcastle were firmly in control, though not for the first time this season they pressed the self-destruct bottom. Titus Bramble, having fouled Luke Moore 25 yards from goal, allowed the striker to get across him from the free-kick that followed. Moore's firm header left Given with little chance and brought him a fifth goal in three matches.

Parity lasted 14 minutes. Solano, having profited from a Shearer pass, hammered a low drive that Sorensen could only parry into the six-yard box. With Villa's defence slow to react, N'Zogbia pounced to bundle the ball home.

Villa, though, might have stolen an equaliser on the stroke of half time when Hendrie, afforded the freedom of Newcastle's area, volleyed over. That chance, however, was nothing compared to the opportunity Baros squandered 15 minutes after the restart when he was brought down in full flight by Babayaro.

The left-back, harshly deemed to have committed a professional foul was dismissed, though Baros, could not inflict further punishment; his weak and woefully straight penalty-kick flicked over the bar by Given's right boot. Barry's close-range shot from the corner that followed required a more testing save, though again the keeper proved equal to the task, as he did later in the half when Juan Pablo Angel was thwarted by a fingertip save.

Man of the match - SHAY GIVEN Barely called upon in the first half but outstanding in the second, the Irishman repelled Villa time and again as they pressed for an equaliser. A superb tip over from Juan Pablo Angel's volley was the pick of his saves.

Can I just say what an incompetent idiot Mike Riley is.

Last year he refused to send Sorenson off for fouling Bellamy on the grounds he wasn't "straight through" on goal and there were defenders getting back.

So why was Babayaro sent off in that context then you cheating little bag of shite?

I think he's got a problem with Shearer, and it's affecting his decisions.

Glenn's Huddle seems to be effective!

Riley is incompetant. Simple as.

MOTD didn't show the penalty appeal we had, which apparently was a blatant penalty. And I wasn't so sure about Babayaro's sending off, didn't seem to intentionally bring down the player at all. :D

Funny that, Newcastle had a good shout for a penalty yesterday too!

Good result like, especially considering Laurel and Hardy, aka Bramble and (in particular) Boumsong were up to their old tricks.

Got an 8 and a 9 in NO match ratings..

Jean-Alain Boumsong - 8

Boum is back. He was a key element of the magnificent 2nd half defensive display which ensured we held on to all 3 points, throwing himself at just about everything and he was solid in the air too. He seems to have regained his confidence and his performances are improving as a result. Also should have scored with a 1st half header which somehow bounced over.

Titus Bramble - 9

The other half of the B Team at the back for United, Bramble was just as good as his partner. While he allowed Moore to get in front of him for the Villa goal, it was quick movement from the striker and only a minor error. Other than that his display was just about faultless as he won every ball, and could even have had a goal himself as he charged forward early in the 2nd half.
