Real's budget Woodgate deal Feb 14 2006

By Paul Gilder, The Journal

Newcastle will be offered the chance to bring Jonathan Woodgate back to St James's Park this summer after it emerged Real Madrid are willing to cut their losses on the former Tyneside favourite.

And although the Spanish giants paid £13.4m for the defender (pictured right) just 19 months ago, it is understood a cut-price fee of £6m would be enough to bring him back to United.

With sources in Madrid claiming the Magpies and Real have a gentleman's agreement in regard to Woodgate, Newcastle will be given first refusal on the England international's signature at the end of this season.

Freddie Shepherd remains close to the talented 25-year-old and has made little secret of his desire to renew acquaintances with the Middlesbrough-born stopper. With the Bernabeu president Florentino Perez prepared to strike a deal this summer, it seems as though he could get his wish.

The transfer will depend on two main factors: the identity of United's next manager and the state of the player's fragile fitness. It is Woodgate's record with injuries which have persuaded Perez that he is expendable as he prepares to overhaul a squad which has once again under-performed this season.

Watched the game against Bilbao last Saturday. He was at his best and if he keeps himself fit I don't think there is any chance of Madrid letting him go.

When fit, he's one of the top defenders in Europe. ;)

IMHO the best.

The ONLY way Woodgate should be let through the door at SJP again is on a 'pay as you play' contract.

Anything else will  offer no value for money whatsoever.

Have to agree with that, we've already got enough high earning flid's on the books imo

When fully fit, he is easily England's best defender.

Imagine him at the back, Parker in midfield and Owen up front........

Him and John Terry would be awesome at the back.

A great English core that would be. Don't forget wor Tayls though. ;)

When fit, Taylor must be about no. 8 or 9 in the queue for England.

Aye, it would be nice like, assuming Owen stays ;) It would also do Taylor the power of good to learn from Woodgate. Both O'Brien and Bramble always looked the business alongside Woody.

I think Owen will stay next year, if only for the fact he will not want to be remembered among Newcastle fans as someone who sat on the bench for the season, although without his goals we would be in somewhat of a relegation battle.

Woodgate returning is a huge possibilty, although 6 million is steep for a player who can hardly play a series of games back to back.

With Woodgate you'd have to be looking at some sort of pay as you play deal because the risk of him missing half a season or more is always there.

If he's fit he's amongst the best defenders in the world and had he never had the injury problems he may well have been thought of as the best.

As somebody said though, if he keeps fit and plays regularly then you'd think Madrid wouldn't want to let him go.

Yeah, wouldn't that be kind of like Real Madrid paying us 7 or 8 million quid to get him fit and then giving him back, and with a nice tan?

We should try to get a timesharing agreement if Woodgate came back and Owen staid. If Owen is unfit we need Woodgate for the defence, if Woodgate is injured we need Owen to score one more than the opponent...

Would be a good signing if he's on a pay as you play deal, but that doesn't derive from the fact we'd still be paying 6 million for him...

If he comes great, but can we afford him? We're in no position to be throwing money around after the summer.

But it would be a great signing as Taylor would really improve under his influence. ;)

Magpies "Surprised" By Woody Reports

NEWCASTLE United today admitted they were "surprised" to be linked with a move for former defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Media reports on Tuesday claimed the England centre-half could be on his way back to St. James' Park from Real Madrid in the summer.

But a club spokesman told nufc.co.uk: "The stories in the morning papers certainly came as a surprise to us.

"Jonathan looks to be enjoying his time in Spain, and we certainly haven't heard anything from Real Madrid, so it would seem the reports are just speculation.

"He is someone who was very popular with staff and fans alike during his time at Newcastle, and as a person, he's always welcome any time he wants to visit St. James'."

United received a record fee for Woodgate when he departed for the Bernabeu Stadium in August 2004.

He only made 36 appearances for the club during an injury-affected time on Tyneside, but he nevertheless still proved himself to be one of the most elegant and talented central defender's in the Magpies' history.

That's that settled, then.
