Woodgate.

Watched the game against Bilbao last Saturday. He was at his best and if he keeps himself fit I don't think there is any chance of Madrid letting him go.

When fit, he's one of the top defenders in Europe. ;)

IMHO the best.

Agreed, he is the best defender I've ever seen in a black and white shirt.

Magpies "Surprised" By Woody Reports

NEWCASTLE United today admitted they were "surprised" to be linked with a move for former defender Jonathan Woodgate.

Media reports on Tuesday claimed the England centre-half could be on his way back to St. James' Park from Real Madrid in the summer.

But a club spokesman told nufc.co.uk: "The stories in the morning papers certainly came as a surprise to us.

"Jonathan looks to be enjoying his time in Spain, and we certainly haven't heard anything from Real Madrid, so it would seem the reports are just speculation.

"He is someone who was very popular with staff and fans alike during his time at Newcastle, and as a person, he's always welcome any time he wants to visit St. James'."

United received a record fee for Woodgate when he departed for the Bernabeu Stadium in August 2004.

He only made 36 appearances for the club during an injury-affected time on Tyneside, but he nevertheless still proved himself to be one of the most elegant and talented central defender's in the Magpies' history.

That's that settled, then.

My three year old neice knows the Real Madrid chairman, and apparently Woodgate wants to look around our training facilities later.

How did she get to know him if she's only 3?

Newcastle dismiss Woodgate link

Woodgate's time at Real has been hampered by injuries

Newcastle have reacted with surprise at reports linking Jonathan Woodgate with a return to St James' Park. The defender left the Magpies for Real Madrid in a £13.4m move in 2004 but his hopes of a regular first-team place have been hampered by injuries.

A Newcastle statement said: "The stories came as a surprise to us.

"Jonathan looks to be enjoying his time in Spain and we certainly haven't heard anything from Real, so it would seem the reports are just speculation."

The statement added: "He is someone who was very popular with staff and fans alike during his time at Newcastle and, as a person, he is always welcome any time he wants to visit St James'."

Woodgate made his latest comeback - from a calf injury - at the end of January.

SORTED.

First thought was "Bargain", but then I thought about his contract, and how much of a payrise he got to go there.

If we could negotiate that back down, and make sure our training methods are improved, I'd pay for SLP's petrol ;)

And I'd buy him some easy listenin' classics for the drive down.

Aye, it would be nice like, assuming Owen stays  It would also do Taylor the power of good to learn from Woodgate. Both O'Brien and Bramble always looked the business alongside Woody.

I think Owen will stay next year, if only for the fact he will not want to be remembered among Newcastle fans as someone who sat on the bench for the season, although without his goals we would be in somewhat of a relegation battle.

Woodgate returning is a huge possibilty, although 6 million is steep for a player who can hardly play a series of games back to back.

Splitting hairs like, but how many matches has Owen sat on the bench? ;)

Sat on his sofa watching the racing would have been closer to the mark.

6 million is quite a lot to pay for a "SICKNOTE" and dontforget we have already poured money down the sink by buying Boumsong

Or you could look at it positively and see that since August 2004, Real Madrid spent 14m on him, have paid a shitload on getting him match-fit and he's had top class experience in training alongside some world class players, and in August 2006, that 14m has been spent on bringing in Boumsong, and Woodgate back, so we've not really lost anything.

I always thought Bramble played miles better when he had Woodgate alongside him. It seemed to improve his confidence as he knew if he fucked up then Woody would sort it out for him.
