Family fury at driver's sentence

Levi died a day after the hit-and-run incident

The family of a three-year-old girl who was killed in a hit-and-run crash have reacted furiously after the driver was jailed for 12 weeks.

Levi Bleasdale was hit by a stolen VW Golf as she crossed a road with her mother in Burnley on 10 September.

Driver Mohammed Hussain, 26, admitted careless driving, having no licence or insurance, failing to stop and failing to report an accident.

Levi's mother Kirsty Ryan, 22, said the sentence filled her with anger.

The sentence does not even begin to reflect the devastation he has caused the Bleasdale family

Mary Williams, Brake

She told the BBC: "He says he is praying for me and my family, well I don't want his prayers.

"He's wrecked my daughter's life, he's wrecked my family's life and I don't want him to pray for me at all - it's too late."

Levi was holding her mother's hand while crossing Ormerod Road when she was struck by the Golf.

She was taken to Burnley Hospital and transferred to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Pendlebury, where she died after her life-support machine was switched off.

The car was found on Thurston Street - where Hussain lived - and he handed himself in five days later.

Driving ban

In addition to the driving offences, Hussain admitted handling stolen goods when he appeared at Burnley Magistrates' Court on Friday. It emerged he was out of prison on parole after being convicted of wounding in 2001.

He was sentenced to four weeks for the handling charge and 12 weeks each for the fail to stop and fail to report charges, to run concurrently. He was also banned from driving for five years.

Careless driving is an offence which does not carry a jail sentence.

Mary Williams OBE, chief executive of Brake, the national road safety charity, said she was "appalled" by the sentence.

"The sentence does not even begin to reflect the devastation he has caused the Bleasdale family.

"Mohammed Hussain will be on the streets in only a few months, while they have been given a life sentence.

"Brake is calling for tough laws to tackle illegal and hit-and-run killer drivers - they should automatically face a charge equivalent to causing death by dangerous driving, which carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison."

That is an absolute fucking joke. Not a very funny one though.

That is terrible like, the law has got to be changed to take into account the consequences of the crime.

Wonder how long it will be before someone points out it was a muslim that did it though. ;)

Typical for this country sadly, its always a joke.

Not only did he run her over, kill her and drive off, but he's stolen the bastard car and has no lisence/insurance AND had handled stolen goods, and was out on parole for a previous conviction for wounding!!!

Might as well give up doing these stories in the press as by now i think everyone in the coutnry know we are a joke and isn't in the least bit surprised by any of the fucking ludicrous sentences we see handed out.

His sentence is just unbelievable, no licence, no insurance, driving a stolen car with false plates, and he had just come out of jail last summer after serving 5 years for GBH, yet they can only give him a few weeks for killing a bairn.

Im not racist at all, he wants locking up for what he has done and the key thown away.

Your spot on Brock, he will get whats coming to him shortly.

The sentence is due to the charge - car crime charges as a whole are a joke which is the real problem

As I've said before I'd charge anybody who gets into a car pissed with attempted murder even if they don't hit anyone - its just about as reckless as you can get imo.

precisely, yet there are people who applaud us letting lawbreakers out of jail because there isn't enough of them. Build more.

Someone has already said he's a muslim, but the fact that he didn't have a license, insurance, handled stolen goods and was out on parole doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

Wonder if he was one of the ones who were advocated to be set free ????? by Rob and his ilk.

The sooner we make ALL crime seen to be rewarded with its just deserts, no matter the short term financial cost, the more these arseholes will not be deterred from breaking the law.

Does anyone not agree that our standards of decency, behaviour and respect for others in this country have drastically dived in the last 20 years ?????

So therefore, what will it be like in a further 20 years if steps are not taken now.

if you killed anyone doing anything other than driving a car it would be murder or manslaughter - but driving seems to put it in a different category

I'd do away with offences like "causing death through dangerous driving " and look at the RESULT -
