Yup..get a better USB adaptor CT.  Most of the cheap ones on Amazon actually even say 10 / 100Mbps in the title.

That or just live with WiFi. 200-300 is plenty. If you're suffering loads of dropouts in video calls and stuff like that it's likely frequency band congestion. You should be able to check what band you and your neighbours are all using for their WiFi with a mobile app, and if your lucky your ISP will let you change which band yours is on in the admin panel so you can choose the least congested one in the immediate vacinity of your house.

Cheers. No the Wi-Fi is solid for the hammering it gets with 3 kids. It’s just the trading site I use now again drops out for a few seconds, which can be a big thing when trading.

The adapter is definitely 1 gig and has about 5000 reviews on Amazon.

I’ll knock another Cat 7 cable up and try that instead of the bought one and if that fails, look for a better adapter 👍

Did you turn the WiFi off when you tested with Ethernet cable?

No, I assumed it just switched over automatically. Does it make a difference?

I'm getting PTSD flashbacks from talking to talk-talks broadband support a few months ago reading this.

@Christmas Tree  if yer WiFi is fine for everything else but the trading site you use is dropping out when you use it, it's likely server end and absolutely fuck all to do with your laptops connection.

Well I did wonder that at first, BUT that doesn’t excuse the adapter not doing what it’s meant to do!!!!

I'm still not getting the need for this. 200 mbs, the lower end you say you get on wifi, is enough to stream over 100 films simultaneously or 25 films in HD. That's an awful lot of porn.

Read the fucking comments Seagulius

Network problems on a trading site, hoped a wired connection might resolve, but looks like it’s their end not mine.

So bandwidth isn't an issue? Yet you also made the point about your kids using it all up? So if you're now saying it's a stability issue, and wired is more stable (is it?), Then what's the issue if your bandwidth halves?

Oh, and a "trading site". Roman coins, amirite?

Is it a USB 3.0 port you're connecting it to on the laptop?

The bandwidth, whether 100 Mbit or 400 Mbit is not going to make a difference to the delivery of a trading site. It could be latency, packet loss or jitter that could cause it to drop out, or it could be on their side. It is possible that it's your wifi that's dropping out, but then you would see issues with things other than the trading site. What actually happens when it drops?

Even if the USB adapter is only operating at 100Mbit that's vastly more than is required for a real time loading web site, so if you're still seeing drop outs when using the USB adapter the wifi is not the cause so it's either your internet quality (not speed) or the site itself.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure now that the drop outs are there end, but I’m still pissed the adapter isn’t doing what it should do. Anyway, they are sending me a different model to see if that solves it.

I also read quite a bit on google about similar issues of poorer speed on wired compared to WiFi and suggestions were to stop certain things running in task manager until you find something that is causing the problem. Not doing that so either new adaptor or back to Wifi
