Fans of other clubs would say the same about Tonali

The difference is I'm yet to see anyone here say that Tonali is the best midfielder in the world

Caicedo and Rice have added a few big game goals to their game recently which obviously raises their profile and grabs headlines. That's maybe the one thing Tonali hasnt done yet. A lot of that has to do with his role in the side and the way we play of course because he can certainly strike a ball.

Other than that he's on par with them imo. If I'm being honest Caicedo on current form probably edges it. Rice can be guilty of taking too long on the ball at times or getting into the sideway passing habit. Although again maybe that also has to do with the mind numbingly boring shite Arteta usually plays.

Paul Scholes was on the overlap fan show and said he thinks Tonali is the best central midfielder in the league.

He is right.

I don't see (or want to believe) a scenario where we haven’t got the ability to auto extend his contract for a year given he was out for 1...

On the Monday night club some daft cunt said caicedo was. Then they mentioned Tonali and it was 'meh maybe'

Long may they think that as far as I’m concerned.

This kind of debate does again make you think that the technical quality of football has dropped in recent decades. The likes of Rice and Bellingham being talked about as one of the best around, couldn't hold a candle to Modric, Kroos, Xavi, Iniesta etc. or Zidane, Seedorf, Pirlo before that. Even players a level below those, say Alonso, Scholes, Ballack, Fabregas and so on were much better on the ball.

I think part of that's down to the change in how football has been been played the last 15 or so years. It has become a more rigid, space occupying game in stages and phases than it ever has been. Players get more time on the ball at the back, less in midfield and strikers have more on the ball in the channels in my opinion.

That dampens the free spirited footballers and the technically advanced ones perhaps don't stand out as much as they use to.

It's generally a more boring sport to watch than it was 20 years ago, although we are now more successful, so I can't be too disheartened.

Wholly agree that Rice, Bellingham etc aren't a patch on those you've mentioned. Top of my head, the only midfielder I can think of that would fall into the same category of player quality (from the prem) would be Kevin De Bruyne.

I remember Jorginho and Kante one year finishing in the top 5 for Ballon D'Or and thought the stature and quality of centre mids continues to diminish. Kante sublime in his own way but not a patch on your list.

Would add Nedved to that list. 2003 he was ridiculous box to box. Scored like 15 goals from cm/lm. Class for about 7-8 years the beast.

Arsenal's midfield looked miles better than ours 10 days ago :cuppa:

I think that was more due to performance on the day, rather than overall ability.

I agree but Arteta plays a different way. We are shit or bust whereas his philosophy is to keep the ball. They can also feed it comfortably back to their defenders and GK without it ending in row z.

Ok so he hasn't signed a new deal now, this extension was signed back during his ban and essentially gave us that year back plus a one year run on if we choose. It's a good position to be in but I hope we offer him an actual new deal either way, he does deserve it.

Definitely, especially so, given he volunteered a pay cut, never mind his performance levels.

I'd genuinely be immensely surprised if we haven't protected ourselves for the year he was out - ie a 1 year extension applied at discretion to club only.

Either way needs a new contract to reward him and protect us.

He's got Real Madrid written all over him & we know how they've been operating re free transfers the last few years (Mbappe, Trent (10m free....), Alaba and Rudiger ).

Best centre mid I've seen in 35 years at our club. Better than Lee, Speed and Batty.

The way he powers past players and picks the perfectly weighted pass makes for tremedous viewing. Swallows up ground like Kante too.

Well fair fucks to Dan Ashworth for delivering. Thought this would be the case but had a worry we'd be inept.

Great protection of contract now reward him with a new one.

Tonali is a beast and Bruno is a magician.

Joelinton is not hitting the same levels as last season so Miley needs to come in.
