Dyer deal nearly done

Kieron Dyer is set to hand Newcastle boss Graeme Souness a massive boost ahead of the new Premiership season by signing a new contract next week.

The former Ipswich man endured troubling times throughout the course of last season as he fell out with previous boss Sir Bobby Robson before generating infamy by brawling with team-mate Lee Bowyer on the pitch against Aston Villa.

After the unsavoury incident both players' futures at St James' Park were called into question but Dyer is now set to commit himself to the club that brought him to The Premiership in 1999.

The news will come as welcome relief for Souness at a time when the future of Dyer's England team-mate Jermaine Jenas remains cloudy due to his unhappiness on Tyneside.

Dyer's agent Jonathan Barnett confirmed that after successfully overcoming some outstanding legal issues his client would be putting pen to paper in the coming days.

"We expect to have the extended deal signed early next week," Barnett told The Mirror.

"There have been no problems.

"It's rubbish to think that Kieron won't be committing himself, everything is agreed on the contract and he is very happy to commit his future to Newcastle.

"It has been held up for a few weeks by some legal technicalities but when I sat down with Freddy Shepherd the whole thing was agreed in an hour."
