I think he was gambling on van dijk not knowing he was there and him therefore potentially exposing the ball, which is a fucking long shot. When he gets there at 1000 mph and the ball isn't exposed he tries to pull-out but he's too late (and he closes his eyes in anticipation of the contact). Red is the right decision because he doesn't pull out in time. It's just completely idiotic of him to have gambled in such a way especially at that point in the match. I still believe that there has to be some element of retribution for the nasty shoulder though I don't believe Gordon was ever trying to hurt him physically in any way. Instead he was trying to use his best weapon (pace) against him to potentially embarras him and it has backfired spectacularly. As MF said it was effort and well meaning, just incredibly naive. I don't think he needs a bollocking for it, but instead it needs to be used as a moment to grow.

One thing’s for certain, those cunts aren’t winning the league playing like that. 2 weeks running they’ve let a 2-goal lead slip from their grasp only to rescue it at the death - and this week they did it against 10 men.
