Chelsea charged over WBA ref row

Chelsea face a Football Association charge of failing to control their players in last Saturday's stormy win at West Bromwich Albion.

 

The Blues are accused of "failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion" over an incident during their 2-1 victory.

 

Chelsea's players surrounded referee Mark Halsey after Ronnie Wallwork fouled Claude Makele.

 

The FA has confirmed that Albion will face no action from the match.

 

An FA spokesman said: "The charge relates to an incident in the 43rd minute of Chelsea's game against West Bromwich Albion on 4 March when several Chelsea players surrounded referee Mark Halsey following a foul by West Brom's Ronnie Wallwork.

 

"Halsey reported the incident to The FA and expressed his view that a number of Chelsea players pressurised him at this time."

 

Chelsea winger Arjen Robben was sent off for a foul on Jonathan Greening in a match which prompted several angry touchline confrontations between Baggies boss Bryan Robson and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

 

Robson had earlier said: "The referee has made no specific complaint to the FA about West Brom following Saturday's game."

 

The Baggies boss also backed Halsey's decision to send off Robben.

 

He said: "I haven't changed my mind about anything I said after the match - apart from that the referee got it spot on with his decision to send off Robben.
