Embrace to sing England World Cup Song

Embrace picked for World Cup song

Rock band Embrace have been chosen to record England's official football World Cup song.

The Football Association is hoping the song World at Your Feet will become a fans' anthem for the England team at the tournament.

Embrace's Danny McNamara said the band were excited about recording the track and hoped to repeat the success of New Order's 1990 track World in Motion.

The World Cup contest begins in Germany on 9 June.

World in Motion, which featured a number of England players including John Barnes, is considered one of England's best footballing anthems.

'Capture the imagination'

David Baddiel and Frank Skinner's Three Lions song, recorded for Euro 96 as an unofficial anthem, was also a critical and commercial success and was re-released for the World Cup in 1998.

FA marketing manager Tom Harold said: "The official World Cup song has become something of an institution and it is really important that we have an original and exciting track.

"We're confident that Embrace's song will capture the imagination of the fans and players alike."

Founded in Huddersfield, Embrace have been releasing records since 1997 and have released five albums, including their number one debut Good Will Out.

They are currently sitting at number two in the singles chart with Nature's Law, taken from their latest album This New Day.

Could be good, they specialise in 'anthemic' tunes.

i think it'll be great as they are the master as the old sing-a-long-an-anthem!

so who would anyone have preferred then as it could have been a lot worse (eh. darkness, kaiser chiefs, girls aloud!)

Exactalicious.

It doesn't need to be a masterpiece of writing or beautifully sung, it needs to be a tune that drunk blokes can easily remember whilst staggering about with their arms round their mates.

I was thinking exactly the same thing.

There's some good tracks on their first album: All You Good Good People; Come Back to What You Know; One Big Family; My Weakness is None of Your Business

Auuuurgh, that first album of theirs is atrocious. The singer's insistently dull, flat, monotonous voice above everything else.

Don't understand why Drawn From Memory isn't recognised as a minor modern-day classic though. :o

Suppose they're similar to the Lightning Seeds so it may be good.

I agree. "Three Lions" is one of my all-time favorite football-anthems. The Lightning Seeds played it at a concert here in Denmark and everyone went mental... Great stuff :o

"Ashes" isn't Chris Martin's song - he wrote "Gravity". "Ashes" is McNamara's own work :o
