that "Freestuff" thing... is it simply that if you get 9 people to fill in an order online, you get a free thing?

and the orders, are they "Pay for this online through this website"? or go through this questionnaire type thing, or is it a "Sign up to this poxy newsletter about growing sperm whale sized phallus on your cheek for science?"

actually just read the T&C and it seems like they have you over a barrel...

they can a) change the t&c any time, in any way, with no notice and they can deny credit without giving a reason, they can alter the value of the products, they can change the products and they can refuse to give you the product, without telling you why, without giving you notice...

I'm failing to see anything you can do about it, if they wait until they've sent you all their advertisement crap (plus the 3rd party adverts which they reserve the right to send and give you no chance to deny this information to third parties) then simply refuse to send you that nice shiney miniMac that you were saving up for.

Hey,

First off, it's not a scam and it is fully legit. (This has been features on BBC and the like, I'm trying to find the link now...)

It works like this;

1) You sign up to a website (usually under someone's referral link).

2) Do an offer, some of those offers are free trials, mostly DVD rental, like ScreenSelect, LoveFilm etc. Other offers are mostly betting sites/casinos - deposit £10minimum is usually the standard.

3) Get a few other people to sign up under your account.

4) Claim your gift.

And obviously the number of people you need to sign up and the type of offers that are available vary from one website to another. So if you want an Ipod Nano, you'll need 4 referrals, while for an Xbox or PSP for example, it'll be higher.

This is a small gallery of people that have already received their gifts:

http://www.exceem.co.uk/gallery/index.php?c=1 . This is much bigger in the US than it is in the UK at the moment, so the scepticism is still quite high towards these sites in the UK. Also, regarding them sending you spam, I don't think any of the sites do sell on your addresses, a case was recently brought up where the biggest network in the US and UK (Freepay/Gratis) had allegedly sold on their emails, which has caused a huge fuss, with lawsuits being filed and denials coming out from Freepay. Your address may be held on by the betting site/casino/film rental company, but they should have the usual options to allow you to opt out during registration. I haven't had any of these problems to be honest.

Please feel free to ask me any more questions, and if you do want to sign up, please have the heart to go through the links in my signature

Ok, it's the bits in Bold that leapt off the page for me.

I think that the page that your sig leads to may well be fine and dandty in itself, but the pages you're directed to from that one would have no problem in fucking you around. See the bits in Bold. The first one is the scariest for me.

I agree that those T+Cs do look to be weighed against the individual and for the company. I think that the first highlighted bit is probably to cover for changes in prices of whatever it is they're giving away. But those extremes in the T+Cs are hardly ever implemented (if ever), there have been one or two websites intending scam, but this gets found out very quickly.

The link I posted above, to exceem.co.uk , has quite a lively forum. It's a leading UK community for verifying the 'giveaway networks', a lot of the site owners that actually run those giveaway networks are also regulars on the exceem forum, so there is a trust in respected and established sites.

It seems that the piece that the BBC used is no longer on their website, the best I can in terms of coverage for this time of night is this:

http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,64614,00.html

http://www.anything4free.com/forums/index....&module=gallery

That link is the American version of Exceem, and that's the 'proof' gallery of pictures their members have sent in. It is huge in America, much bigger than it is here, and it is scary when you go on their forums and there's people there that have received $14-15,000 worth of freebies.

I fully understand your scepticism, I had to read up on this for a fair bit to make sure this 'business' is fully legit, and there is plentyful evidence that it is.

I'm happy to answer any questions on this, although it's getting on a bit, need to catch a couple hours of sleep.

Mate, that's a pyramid scheme, guys like you don't usually benefit from it. I'd also suggest that you have a think about the difference between "within the boundaries of the law" and "legit". And I love the fact you've given them permission to spam you; they sound like real stand-up guys.

You're wasting your time with it on here anyway, I think people on here have a bit more cop on; except maybe Gemmill, who will struggle between knowing better and being a tight git.

Technically, it's not a pyramid scheme. In a pyramid scheme, those that join have to pay something to someone 'above' them in the pyramid to get any gain. Here, it's free. . I haven't spent anything on this, so there's not much to lose to be honest.

I haven't seen spam to be an issue, apart from one case I mentioned earlier. It's in the interest of the company to sign up as many people as they can, so if spam was a problem, it would deter a whole load of potential sign-ups.

Oh and if you've got a couple of minutes, this may be interesting:

By the way, I'm not here to spam or anything, just answering a question about my sig like.

Have you got any free stuff off them yet?

123544[/snapback]

This is where it's all going to fall apart, I can tell.

I haven't personally, no. But, I've only literally just started a couple of weeks back.

I do promise you do that these people have got their stuff through these websites:

http://www.exceem.co.uk/gallery/index.php?c=1

I mean if a little charva from that site can get over a grands worth of free stuff in a couple of months, why can't normal people?

No, in fairness you've taken it on the chin.

Where did you get the definition of a pyramid scheme neccesitating some sort of pay-to-play system? It's certainly a type of pyramid scheme, but a less and less common one, MLM seems to be the more common term nowadays but that's just semantics. It's not that the bottom rung lose money, but time, which equates to the same thing. I had a read of this article, and this is really what I'm on about:

So the question again becomes, how do these companies make money? The secret, says Alex Zhardanovsky, lies in something called "breakage." Zhardanovsky is the co-founder of AzoogleAds, an online ad agency that connects companies such as Gratis with advertisers such as Blockbuster and Stamps.com. According to Zhardanovsky, who says that Gratis' fee per lead is usually more in the $30 to $40 range, "most consumers will not fulfill all the requirements of the program, and will not receive their iPod."

There have been scams, yes, but then there are sites that are certified and supported by respected online communities, like Exceem. They do not allow sites on there that have either not been proven to be real or look at all suspicious. The idea is to use the bigger companies that have already sent out a high number of gifts, rather than new upstarts.

For example, a new site has come out offering a scooter for something like 50 referrals, among other things. Now, I wouldn't mind a scooter, but no way am I signing up to that site until they have been proven legit and have sent out gifts for a month or two. It's all about perspective ..

The site I was using was freeipods. I think it's one of the older one and has had a lot of good media.

As I said in the other thread, I'd bring this thread back up when I actually get something for free out of this. Got a 4gb Ipod Nano today, going straight to our lass. I'm going away tonight, but will put up a pic of the box and the like in a couple of weeks if need be.

It took about a month to complete the site, I then signed up to Blockbuster DVD rental as part of the conditions, stayed on for a month, paid £13 I think it was, for a bunch of DVDs, and about 3-4weeks later got the nano. Not too bad.

It wasn't difficult to do, but not the easiest either. If anyone's interested in signing up etc, my website is in my profile i think.

Yeah, so just to bring this up again, because you know, it's vital for all concerned.. I've received a few things so far for free (or close enough anyway). Haven't really been trying too hard, so it's slowed down a bit, but i've received an ipod nano (which the lass is now in the process of slowly destroying..), an ipod video that's gone to my brother, an xbox360 came the other week, and i've got an order for the Nintendo Wii done, so just waiting for it to come out.. Also would have an order for one of them new 8gb Nanos if I get my skates on and buy some hosting, could get it before christmas..

Regarding some of the points raised above, i've yet to be screwed over by any of those sites in any way and haven't received spam whether by email or post.

the only real negative aspect was the site i was trying to get a ps3 from - (the same site as j69) has turned a bit shit, and got rid of the free offers, so now i'm halfway to a ps3, and it now being rather difficult to complete as no fucker wants to spend a tenner.. chalk that one down to inexperience i suppose..
