THE TOON GET AROOND

Fans of Newcastle United and Sunderland have been named the most committed supporters in the country, after new research showed they travelled further than anyone else to watch their teams play.

The Toon Army finished top of the league, with predictions that they will travel a "staggering" 22.8 million miles this season, according to a study by Continental Tyres.

An analysis of all 92 league clubs in England and Wales predicted that Sunderland fans would be second to their North East rivals, travelling 22.3 million miles.

Supporters of Portsmouth faced 21.8 million miles of travel, securing them third place in the Fan Miles league.

The survey said fans from all four divisions would travel 830,363,404 miles this season - nine times the distance between the earth and sun.

The top 10 table was: (Team, division, fan miles)

1 Newcastle, Premiership 22,782,000

2 Sunderland, Premiership 22,272,000

3 Portsmouth, Premiership 21,792,000

That certainly wins the award for is the funniest set of statistics I've seen in a while, who compiled it, Freddy Sheppard our Douglas Hall?

I could probably come up with some compelling evidence to show we're the most miserable and pessimistic fans at the moment!
