coco move back on!

Inter Milan have offered to pay Francesco Coco's wages so that the Italian full-back can prove himself at St James' Park.

The Chronicle revealed yesterday that the 17-times capped left-back's loan move to United had gone on ice and the club's official website later reported that deal was off.

But the word from Italy today was that Inter Milan would continue to pay Coco's £60,000-a-week wages because they have complete faith in him.

A source at the San Siro Stadium told me today: "Inter Milan have heard that Coco was coming back to them because Newcastle were not happy about certain aspects of his fitness.

"But Inter have so much faith in Coco's fitness that they are ready to pay his wages for the full 12 months he would be at St James' Park."

There was no word from St James' Park on the Coco situation at first today but frankly United would have nothing to lose giving the idea a go.

They already have a left-back in Celestine Babayaro who, for them, spends too much time on the treatment table and another left-back in Robbie Elliott who is in the doghouse after his howler against Deportivo La Coruna in the Intertoto Cup at St James' Park eight days ago.

And regardless of the situation surrounding Coco, I believe Graeme Souness will hand Steven Taylor the left-back

position against Arsenal at Highbury.

Souness was surprisingly upbeat today despite all United's problems and he said: "Young Taylor is a beast of a player and we know he will make life difficult for anyone he comes up against if we play him at Highbury on Sunday.

"We know that left-back is not his favourite position but we also know that he will defend as well as anybody.

"Yes, he won't get forward but there are not many left-backs out there who do get forward. Ashley Cole is an obvious exception but the ones who do get forward all used to be left-wingers like Roberto Carlos and Wayne Bridge."

Getting him completely free for the whole season? Sounds like a good deal to me.

Seems like an excellent deal. Between him and babayaro we might actually have half a left back!

Surely this, along with the imminent signing of Michael Owen is cause for optimism

A free left back for a year and if he's a new Baba we're not losing anything... sounds too good to be true.

Yep, you're right. Inter are that desperate to get rid of him that they're willing to pay his wages to do so.

Bet they don't pay his physio bills too B)

That's what worries me, why are they so desperate to get rid?
