SHEFFIELD UNITED are ready to make Nicky Butt their first £ 1million-a-year earner.

Boss Neil Warnock is being heavily backed by his board in a bid to recruit the former Manchester United and England midfielder.

Butt, in the last year of his Toon contract, is keen on a £500,000 move to Bramall Lane after an ill-fated loan at relegated Birmingham.

WEST HAM are trying to tempt Fulham midfielder Steed Malbranque to Upton Park. Newcastle are also interested but the Hammers hope he will prefer to stay in London

WEST BROM have asked Curtis Davies to stay and help them get back into the Premiership next season as they fight off increased interest from Portsmouth, Tottenham, Newcastle and Wigan.

The £6 million-rated centre-half is hot property this summer, but the Baggies are set to complete the signings of striker John Hartson and defender David Weir to prove they aim to return to the top flight at the first attempt.

A look at today's gossip column just showed me again how fabricated most of these rag rumours are. The Star saying that Wenger has made a last ditch effort to sign Kompany when the player has already been officially presented by HSV over a week ago and also saying that Bayern want to sign Mellberg when Bayern did sign van Buyten at the very same day and certainly don't need another centre back.
