The 26-year-old ruptured his anterior crucial ligament just over a minute into England's final World Cup group game against Sweden, and when he realised the severity of the injury his first reaction was one of guilt. "I can control my emotions and I can honestly say that when I was flat on my back with ice-packs around my knee, it wasn't self-pity I was feeling but guilt," he said. "I was sending text messages apologising to all sorts of people for letting them down. "I feel really guilty when I think of the people at Newcastle United. I think of the chairman Freddy Shepherd, who has invested all that money (£17million) and Glenn Roeder, the manager, who has kept in touch through the tournament and been very supportive. And those great fans who have only seen me for 11 matches." Shepherd has already described the compensation being paid by the Football Association to cover the loss of their star striker as "far too low". For Owen's part, he hopes to return to Germany on July 9 to collect a World Cup winner's medal. He wrote in his Times column: "As I left the team hotel in Germany yesterday to fly home, I told Sven-Goran Eriksson that I would be back out for the World Cup final. "My tournament might be over, but I still want that medal around my neck. "It is strange to think that my farewell yesterday was the last I might see of Sven, a manager who has picked me whenever I have been available and for whom I have scored a lot of goals. Will he be the same player after this injury? 151910[/snapback] that's my worry. shearer lost a good yard of pace through serious knee and ankle injuries but he was able to adapt and remodel his game. owen's game is all about his pace; without it, he contributes little. he'll always be a good finisher but we'll have to wait and see just how much this injury takes out of him. you have to wonder if he'll be a regular come the next world cup - i doubt it personally. he'll be 30 by then. this injury could end up meaning that he stays with us for his entire contract, depending on how he ends up. i can't see the biggest clubs around queuing up for to sign him for a while now like. And a fair estimate of the time on the sidelines is six months as this is the average time nowadays. Jormany's Philipp Lahm had this operation early in June last year and was back playing Championsleague at the end of November. I had the same operation (+ a minor operation on the meniscus) in the mid of June last year and was allowed to do full sports in December. And I even did get the best treatment as my insurance refused to pay me the best possible rehabilitation. You can't compare the effect of this kind of injury to what it was about 15 years ago.
