Banned Hamilton keeps Athens gold

Tyler Hamilton

Hamilton tested positive in 2004 for blood transfusions

American Tyler Hamilton will be able to keep his gold medal from the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Hamilton tested positive for a blood transfusion after winning the Olympic time-trial title.

He was initially allowed to keep his prize after his B or second sample was destroyed by being deep-frozen.

Russia appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on behalf of silver-medallist Vyacheslav Ekimov, but that bid was rejected.

"Tyler Hamilton can retain the gold medal he won at the time-trial event in Athens and the ranking of this race is definitively confirmed," the CAS said in its ruling.

The 34-year-old is serving a two-year ban after testing positive for blood transfusions at the 2004 Tour of Spain, weeks after winning his Olympic title.

That ban was upheld by the CAS in February.
