Owen, who returned to Tyneside last week just hours after rupturing his cruciate in England's game with Sweden, has been absent for the last couple of days after the squad reported back for pre-season training on Wednesday. But Michael was back at the Benton base this morning to see his team-mates - and have another meeting with United's medical staff - before preparing to head out to Colorado to see top surgeon Dr Richard Steadman. In an exclusive interview which will be shown on Newcastle World TV, Owen said: "It's good to be back with the lads. "I've come out of the England dressing room and back into the Newcastle dressing room, and as I expected there is plenty of stick and banter flying around already. "It's nice to see the lads again before I jet off to America. "Once I've been out to see the specialist, I'll be looking forward to getting back here and being in amongst it all again." Michael will head to Colorado on Monday, accompanied by new club doctor Roddy Macdonald, and expects to be in the USA for up to a fortnight before returning home to start his rehabilitation. He added: "It's just coming up to a couple of weeks now since I did it, and at the minute it is just dead time really while I'm waiting to have the operation. "As soon as we get the operation out of the way we will be looking forward to a fixed date or a fixed time to come back. "The last few days has just been trying to get the swelling down, and trying to get the knee as healthy as possible so we can get it operated on." Owen got to know Newcastle's medics better than he would have hoped in his maiden season at Gallowgate, but he knows he will be in the best hands when he comes back from his operation. "Coming back from the last injury there was a slight setback in the rehabilitation, but in terms of the physios here at Newcastle and the new doctor we have now, I'm in the best hands," Michael went on to say. "The doctor comes with a great reputation. I've seen him a few times already and I know I'm definitely in safe hands. "As much as you can never enjoy rehabilitation, I'm in the best hands. "We had a look at the pros and cons for a lot of different surgeons. "There are a lot of good surgeons here in England, and we weighed up whether travelling all that way to the other side of America and staying out there and flying back would be worthwhile. "But Dr Steadman has so much experience, Alan Shearer for one speaks very highly of him, and I've been inundated with players who have had knee injuries and people like doctors and physios, even the surgeon who did my foot. "I've spoken to everyone, and we came to the conclusion that Richard Steadman was the best man for the job." He added: "I'll go out there on Monday, be examined on Tuesday, then we'll do the operation as quickly as possible and then get straight into the rehab. "It is going to be a hard slog. I'll have the operation, and they tend to like you to stay out there for perhaps a week or 10 days after that to start the rehab and they try to get the knee moving quite soon afterwards. "I'd like to think I'll be back as soon as possible, obviously. "The operation needs to go according to plan first, so we'll get that out of the way, and hopefully that will go fine and we can look forward to a smooth rehab.
