Harper set to be in demand

Sunderland and West Ham United want Newcastle United reserve team keeper Steve Harper. It is thought that Newcastle United will allow Harper to depart the club under a gentleman’s agreement with chairman Freddy Shepherd because he has been a loyal and patient servant of the club. It remains to be seen if this would extend to a move to the Stadium of Light for the player.

Harper has had few chances in the Newcastle United first team thanks to the impressive form of first choice keeper Shay Given. It is understood that manager Glenn Roeder is keen to keep Harper at the club but the shot stopper is desperate to be playing first team football.

Sunderland are in need of a goalkeeper themselves as Kelvin Davis is close to a move away from the club. He looks set to join Southampton in the near future whilst West Ham United are also after a shot stopper as well. Shaka Hislop has left the club and it leaves Roy Carroll as the only experienced keeper left at Upton Park. Harper's contract is up at the end of coming season and Given has signed a new four year deal. This means a continued spell on the bench and much frustration for Harper.

So if we don't have a shortage of cover elsewhere on the pitch, they're now thinking of letting one of the best second choice keepers walk away from the club too! ;)

Roeder says the whole squad knows how important the next game is.

Roeder throws down the gauntlet to Luque.

etc.

Got to admit, Newcastle managers do very quickly become parodies of themselves.

If i was Given i'd do everything to ensure Harper stays, because this is NUFC and the second we let Harper go, Given will get a serious injury.

You know they are Freddy's love twins (seperate mums and dads but a minor fact) he's going nowhere!
