SUPPOSEDLY we're supposed to be announcing one of our free signings today. According to N-O. ;) Apparently some academy lads have let slip or something like that.

We'll see like - it ties in with T-Keith's press conference on Thursday story.....

How far from Roeder's "must have premiership experience, can't afford to gamble on expensive players we know nothing about" list do the likes of Tavano and Martins sound though? Either it's total bullshit, or we've completely failed in our attempts to get any of our initial targets. Probably the latter. Either way it's not looking great.

Francesco Tavano's agent has confirmed that Newcastle are indeed keen on securing the player's signature - although they look like facing a battle to land him.

The 27-year-old Empoli striker emerged as a target for The Magpies earlier this week and now Stefano Guercini has confirmed that there are talks planned with the North East giant's.

"Newcastle are one of the clubs interested in Stefano," he told skysports.com.

Guercini also revealed that Newcastle are not the only Premiership side keen on securing Tavano - who bagged 19 goals last season.

"There are three other clubs along with Newcastle. I hope to talk with them all this weekend.

"We are hopeful something will be done."

Tavano has bagged 38 goals in the last two seasons and has attracted attention from a number of clubs including Internazionale, Valencia and Shakhtar Donetsk - but he would like the chance to play in England.

"Of course Francesco would love to play in The Premiership," added Guercini.

"It is a dream for most players and he would certainly like the chance."

Has anyone really heard of this bloke? At 27 you would think he would have been playing somewhere other than Empoli if he was really any good. I know that's often a bollocks argument, but seriously - who is he?!

Could be like the Luca Toni situation, totally off the radar until he was about 26 or 27 and then he's banging them in at Palermo, gets his move and bangs them in at Fiorentina and gets his call up.

Edit: Mind that is hugely optimistic.

Must admit I don't watch as much Italian Footie as I used and I have no idea if he's any good or what he's like. I have the feeling we're getting a bit desperate now though.

Until the last couple of seasons, he'd scored about 6 goals in 70 games.

Thing is that we're weakest midfield position is the midfield so I'd be glad to see gravesen here.
