New star's on horizon

Glenn Roeder is close to making his second summer signing after the Newcastle United boss indicated he had already agreed a fee with the player's club.

Roeder and chairman Freddie Shepherd have had to be patient in their efforts to attract the right calibre of player to the North-East during a sluggish transfer market.

But having pulled off the capture of Republic of Ireland winger Damien Duff this week, the Magpies are increasingly confident that a steady succession of new faces will arrive at St James's Park in the next fortnight.

The identity of the player Newcastle have spent the last few days talking to is a closely guarded secret but names circulating last night were Tottenham Hotspur's Jermain Defoe and England centre-back Sol Campbell.

Newcastle will also be given the opportunity to sign Chelsea's Wayne Bridge when the Blues complete the transfer of Ashley Cole from Arsenal and Shaun Wright-Phillips may well complete a hat-trick of signings from Stamford Bridge for Roeder if he joins on a season's loan.

"We are in the process of talking to one player with his club's permission and there are one or two that we are talking to who we don't need the club's permission for obvious reasons," said Roeder, who will give Duff his first run-out in black and white stripes at St James's Park against PSV Eindhoven this afternoon.

"We have had to be patient, we have to make sure we get the quality of player into the squad who can play a big part next season.

"We don't want to rush in and a couple of weeks later wish I hadn't because somebody better has become available, or rush in and not do enough homework on a player and find out he is not the sort of person I want to work with.

"The market is going to accelerate over the next few weeks. It's just like last year, a couple of logs will free the rest of the river to come gushing down."

Campbell was initially linked with a move to Newcastle in May, but the 31-year-old preferred a move abroad. However, with nothing concrete emanating from the continent, the defender could have changed his mind.

Defoe was also a reported target for the Magpies at the start of the summer and Roeder met a player in London on Thursday to discuss a move, with sources in the capital insisting the England international is far from happy at White Hart Lane.

In an ideal world, Roeder has admitted he would prefer to have all of his new recruits in place before the Premiership curtain-raiser against Wigan on August 19.

But he is pragmatic enough to realise a football manager rarely operates in an ideal world. He added: "We're not anticipating that players will come in after the season has started.

"It may be the case that we end up signing a player in the week leading up to Wigan or even in the last week of the transfer window.

"The days of 24-hour transfers are over and some can drag on for three or four weeks. The quickest signings you make are often the worse ones."

Meanwhile, Roeder is delighted to be able to welcome Dutch giants PSV and Spanish side Villareal as he continues to condition his players.

He said: "The games against PSV and Villareal are very important for us."

We wouldn't need to make a bid for Campbell as he hasn't got a club.

That certainly sounds like Campbell, I'd be very happy to get rid of Boumsong and get Campbell in.

Anyone else on a free that we would be interested in? Bernard?

EDIT: Roeder did come out and say he wasn't after Campbell, it sounded like he meant he wasn't interested as opposed to Campbell not being interested.

He might be right to - there's certainly a chance we'll get him before the season starts.
