Lazarus 0 Posted August 1, 2006 Share Posted August 1, 2006 I think I'm going to attempt to learn soon, I really should've got it out of the way when I was 17 but all my friends learned and my family can drive so I've always got away with not having to. Regret it now though as I'm totally unmotivated. My main problems are that a) from the 1 lesson I have had and a brief drive in my cousin's car I KNOW I will be shit (yes I realise everyone is when they start but I'll be particularly terrible) and I hate learning things that I can't practice independently. 168325[/snapback] Give it a bash. ewerk 26232 Posted August 1, 2006 Share Posted August 1, 2006 I passed first time though I would say I had about 20 lessons but it was with my dad who used to be a driving instructor so I was well prepared and it saved me a fortune. The key to the test is to appear relaxed and at ease, slide the seat back, stick on a few "banging tunes", only use one hand to steer and don't forget to wear a baseball cap angled upwards. I'd urge any 17 year old who can afford it to do it straight away though. I know loads of people who couldn't be arsed back then and now really regret it and don't really have the time to learn. Like someone said earlier, the car only needs slight adjustments for it to stay straight, you need to make sure the examiner sees you doing everything. since the test I don't think I've held the wheel at "ten to two" or "Quarter to three", I could count the number of times I've parrallel parked, simply because there's rarely any need. things they should teach you, how to text someone without taking your eyes off the road. How to enjoy music without forcing it on everybody else in the county How to FUCKING INDICATE how to refrain from putting make up on/checking for blemishes/faffing with your hair (this is for you ladies) how to keep a safe distance form the car in front, the closer you get, the slower I go How to refrain from decorating your car with tat. My first instructor decided the best way to toughen me up for the rammed streets of Blyth would be to jolly around the country for two hours at £40 a time. Oh, then decide I'd have to find a new instructor (and different car) two weeks before the test. Wankstain. Come test day my clutch foot was shaking like someone had plugged it into the mains and clipped the kerb on a reverse park enough to warrant a fail. (I can't stay still at the best of times). I then proceeded to be distracted enough to straight on at a roundabout- ignoring the instructor who wanted to go right so I think that actually counted as two fails in one go. The instructor whom I'd been foisted upon then actually showed me the test routes unlike the previous useless twat and I flew through the second test. Hint: book a test for early Saturday morning- Sunday if you can swing it. Yep, it's another £15 but it will make your life a lot easier when you dont have to worry about lorries/masses of kids/market day etc. And under no circumstances hire MICHAEL MEAD ADI. He is a moneygrabbing charlatan twat. Hmm. That might get edited, but as long as it takes some business away before it does, then fine by me. He was on holiday in Houston when i was there a bit back and honestly he is the worst driver in the world. He would never pass his test if he took it now. Veering out of his lane on a busy 6-lane motorway, taking right turns from the left hand lane of a dual carriageway. Just completely clueless and terrifying to be a passenger. Typical London tosspot as well so he thinks he knows best with everything. We had a MASSIVE argument when he was demanding directions off me and then refusing to do what I told him because [posh accent]"Noooooo, actually I think this might be a better wayyyyy"[/posh accent]. Cue me. "Right, f*ck yer then! RANT RANT RANT RANT!" One of those moments where all of the little things that have been annoying you about someone you would never normally see that much, but then have to spend 10 days, with just come flying out before you've got a chance to censor them. I still hate driving in foreign countries mind, I'm convinced that one day I'll have a head-on crash, so only drive abroad when there is absolutely no other choice. I know several people in their 30s now who never bothered learning to drive. It becomes MUCH harder when you're older and I suspect they regret it now. I never bothered learning to drive when I was a kid (money better spent on drink etc) and only really got round to it over the last few years. I passed my test this year at the ripe old age of 34 and must say it was the most stressful thing Ive ever had to do! I was under so much pressure (from work and family but predominantly from myself) that i went to pieces every test I took and ended up like a bit of maureen off driving school! The reasn I said it by the way, is I left it 6 months before splashing out £300 on a Mk2 Escort anyway, I was utter shite. I had passed first time as well, but in that 6month forgot most of it. Actaully took te right wing off after a couple weeks by reversing into a parking space and hitting my front end along a fence Damn, that was about 15 years ago now like. On another note, I failed my Class 1 when I went for it because I wasnt strong enough to change down the gears and ended up free wheeling in neutral over a roundabout quite interesting when driving an 18 wheel artic !
