The Football Association were today reviewing their decision to downgrade Jermaine Jenas' red card against Arsenal following advice from FIFA.

Disciplinary chiefs at Soho Square were contacted by the game's governing body, after referee Steve Bennett asked for the midfielder's dismissal for a challenge on Gilberto in Sunday's Barclays Premiership match to be reduced to a caution.

 

However, it is understood FIFA have warned the FA that their regulations include no basis for appeal against a red card other than in the case of mistaken identity.

 

Newcastle indicated they would appeal against Bennett's decision, which left them playing with 10 men for almost an hour at Highbury - although they did not need to, because the official moved swiftly to address the situation.

 

"We can confirm we have received communication from FIFA and we will be reviewing our position and responding to that," an FA spokesman told PA Sport today.

 

The review will consider the procedures involved before a response is made.

 

Jenas would have missed three matches had his sending-off been allowed to stand, and both he and manager Graeme Souness will hope FIFA's intervention does not spark a further change of heart.

I don't know where this expression came from but when we were young we'd call people who were more concerned with the rules than anything, particularly fun, fucking 'rules lawyers'. That's all they are, trying to justify their wages so they can continue to stuff their fat fucking bureaucratic faces.

Football Association chiefs were insisting the decision to downgrade Jermaine Jenas' red card at Arsenal on Sunday will stand despite the launch of a review of their disciplinary procedures.

 

The FA were looking at their general policy on referees' re-thinks and the appeals process after being contacted by FIFA in the wake of Steve Bennett's decision to reduce the Newcastle midfielder's punishment for a challenge on Gilberto to a caution.

 

They confirmed they were reviewing their procedures and will respond to the game's governing body in due course, but there will be no further consideration of the Jenas decision. "We can confirm we have received communication from FIFA and we will be reviewing our position and responding to that," said an FA spokesman.

 

It is understood FIFA have pointed out their regulations allow for appeals against red cards only in the case of mistaken identity.

 

Newcastle indicated they would appeal against Bennett's decision, which came 32 minutes into their 2-0 defeat at Highbury, but the official got there first and asked the FA to downgrade the card from red to yellow on Monday morning.

 

Jenas would have missed three games had the original decision not been altered, although there is no chance his reprieve will be temporary despite the latest development.
