Newcastle are ready to invest £5m in the surprise signing of Collins John from Fulham. The Holland international forward is a favourite of the St James' Park chairman Freddy Shepherd and a deal has been agreed between both clubs and the player.

Though Glenn Roeder is understood to be unsure about the striker's suitability and would prefer a move for Internazionale's Obafemi Martins, Shepherd has every faith that John will provide the goals to cover for the absence of Michael Owen. The England striker is not expected to return to competitive action until 2007 following a knee-ligament injury sustained at the World Cup, making a goal-scoring striker Newcastle's highest transfer-market priority.

 

Despite growing restive over a lack of first-team opportunities and clashing with Chris Coleman, his manager at Fulham, John scored 11 goals though he made only 16 Premiership starts last season, making him his club's leading scorer and drawing Shepherd's interest.

A move for Martins may yet scupper John's transfer to the north-east, though the Fulham player is far more attractive from a financial perspective since he would command lower wages and transfer fee than the Nigeria inter- national, for whom Inter are seeking to recover £10m.

 

At 20 John is also, according to reports, significantly younger than Martins who, though officially 21, allegedly played in the same youth set-up in his homeland as the Newcastle left-back Celestine Babayaro, suggesting Martins may be six years older than he claims.

 

Newcastle remain in the market for a left-back and are ready to step up their interest in Chelsea's Wayne Bridge. That move hinges on the Premiership champions' success in negotiations for Ashley Cole. Though the talks have reached an impasse that brought no development yesterday, it is not expected to be terminal, prompting Bridge to consider his options. He does not wish to remain at Chelsea if Cole's transfer is completed as expected before August 31 and Newcastle are ready to offer him the first-team football he craves.
