The French international has had a difficult first season and a half with Newcastle United since moving over the border from Rangers in January 2005. Though he is contracted to The Magpies until 2010, boss Glenn Roeder could be willing to let the 26-year-old leave as he looks to build his own squad at St James' Park. The Stade Felix-Bollaert outfit have been linked with a move for the player before, but their 4-0 defeat away at local rivals Lille on Sunday has stepped up the urgency of the situation. Club chairman Gervais Martel is understood to be livid by the weekend's failings and wants to bring in a strong centre back to shore up the team's defensive frailties. Reports emanating out of France suggest the former Auxerre star is also being monitored by some German sides, in case negotiations for a return to Ligue 1 fall short. Scottish Mag 3 Posted August 17, 2006 Author Share Posted August 17, 2006 Jean-Alain Boumsong could be offered the chance to revive his career in the Bundesliga after it emerged that Hamburg are preparing a bid for the hapless Newcastle defender. There has been no shortage of interest in the French international this summer but, although Marseille, Monaco and Lens are among the queue of clubs attempting to strike a loan deal with United officials, their reluctance to pay Boumsong's full salary remains a stumbling block. Bordeaux remain keen on the 26-year-old but, having made their interest known last week, les Girondins have yet to press ahead with a deal. And that could leave the path clear for Hamburg, with head coach Thomas Doll having earmarked Boumsong as a potential replacement for Daniel Van Buyten, the former United target who has this summer moved to Bayern Munich. Dietmar Beiersdorfer, the German club's director of sport, last night confirmed his club's interest and said: "He (Boumsong) isn't happy there (Newcastle). I know him from his Auxerre days." Like all the other clubs pursuing a player surplus to requirements at St James's Park, Hamburg hope to sign Boumsong on an initial loan basis. But unlike his French admirers, the Bundesliga outfit have an advantage. The likes of Marseille, Monaco and Lens all want Boumsong until the end of the season but want Newcastle to continue to pay 50% of his wages. That Hamburg are understood to be willing to pay the full amount means Germany is United's preferred destination for the player. Boumsong was on international duty with France last night but is due back on Tyneside this morning. Having resigned himself to the fact that he will have no part to play for the Magpies this weekend, the centre-half will hope to receive clarification on his future as quickly as possible.
