Espanyol report Barca over 'injured' duo

MADRID, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Espanyol are up in arms after city rivals Barcelona fielded two Spain players in the first leg of the Super Cup just three days after they had withdrawn from international duty through injury.

Centre back Carles Puyol and midfielder Xavi pulled out of Tuesday's friendly international against Iceland on the eve of the match because of minor injury niggles but then trained normally with their club and played in the Super Cup at Montjuic on Thursday.

Espanyol director Pedro Tomas said that Barca had flouted FIFA rules which state that players who withdraw from international duty through injury should not play for their clubs for at least five days.

'Before the match we sent a note to FIFA, the Spanish Federation (RFEF) and Barcelona in which we accused Barcelona of breaking the rules about the use of internationals' Tomas was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Friday.

Barcelona won the first leg 1-0, Xavi played for more than an hour and Puyol was replaced by new signing Gianluca Zambrotta six minutes from time.

Just asking, aren't we doing the same thing with Given and Duff for Ireland? Just curious, in case Wigan also complain about that :(

it's a follow on from all the ridiculous impguning games scenario last season when real madrid had a couple of shots at getting games replayed after they had lost. and various teams, particularly osasuna, considered doing ti to Barcelona over Messi. Nothing will happen. It's to try and persuade supporters that some higher power is preventing their mediocre team from winning.
