I've received this worrying email today. Now I would normally ignore any scams or any kind of threat, but they have my address....!

Tell me what you think I should do after reading this because I did a search for that group and persons name and while the company's name exists it doesn't appear to be anything to do with a security department. I can't find the name Adrian Grace there either.

Dear (My full name)

We are committed to protecting you, with the latest technology to keep your details secure,

and dedicated teams to monitor online activity and intercept any suspicious actions.

And we do everything we can to protect our online customers, but the steps we take

can be much more effective if you work with us to protect yourself.

21 August 2006 our security system detected an unsuccessfull access attempt to your online account

from Ip address 81.190.253.29 that does not correspond to your current address.

(My full address including postcode)

Please click here to confirm your current address or change it online.

If you do not confirm your address until 24 August 2006 your account will be SUSPENDED for security reasons

and we will send you an Activation Code by post which you will need to renew your online banking service access.

You will receive this within seven days if your current address is not confirmed.

Yours sincerely

Adrian Grace

Security Department

Alliance & Leicester Group

If this is legit then it sounds like I seriously need a good security package.

Dont click on the link to verify your address.

I'd either ring or email (but dont use 'reply') their customer services and tell them youve received the email.

Does your email allow you to view additional info about message headers??? hotmail lets me and i get this extra info

When was the last time you ran a FULL virus and adware scan?

By the way, it sounds like bollocks though because why shouldn't you attempt to access your account from an IP address which isn't your home address? Surely that's the beauty of internet banking.

Why would the bank threaten to suspend you for accessing your account from two different IP addresses though? I regularly access mine from work or home and my bank have never said anything. What's the point if you can only do it from one IP address??

I realised it was fake from the moment I saw it. What worries me is the fact that they have my full name, address & postcode along with the threat.

If they get some sort of spyware on your comp which is pathetically easy nowadays they simply get that info from your web browser

It probably isn't that hard to get someone's address and email address tbh. There are companies selling info like that all the time. You haven't applied for any free razors lately, have you? I won't go near those sort of offers, cos all it does is quadruple the junk mail coming through your door.

must people dont have static ip addresses so how would they know this was or wasnt you. your chance to have a dynamic ip address which changes everytime you start your broadband connection

definetly a fake, but the fact they have your name and address is worrying

I don't think I have, but if I have done so then it's possibly it could have also been opted to a 3rd party too.

Never taken out any loans through work or anything like that. I'm sure that company would be interested in knowing about this though so I might give them a call.
