As is jumping out of the window of a skycraper apparently. They reckon you're unconcious by the time you hit the ground so feel nowt.

Who's "they"? Anyway, it's bullshit, there's no reason to be unconscious. Mind, in most cases death will be more or less instant.

CO kills by prederentially replacing the oxygen molecules on haemoglobin cells so you continue to breathe and don't have the "Choking reflex" you get when drowning. The brain dies frrom lack of oxygen in a few minutes

N2 and CO2 choke you by reducing he amount of oxygen in the air

H2S, SO, Cyanide are really lethal - they act as a poison

Sarin and similar nerve gasses attack the nervous sytem and stop you from breathing and functioning

Mustard gas and similar are burning agents - they kill by destroying your lung tissue

If you fall from height into water James-Bond-baddie-style, I always assumed it's because from great height the water's surface is akin to falling onto something hard. Is this right? From how high can you survive?

Just something I'd heard, nothing to backup the claim so I wouldn't be surprised if it is bullshit. I was guessing it had something to do with the speed of travelling through the air causing you to hyperventilate and pass out.

Sure it was one of those programmes about the people who jumped on 9/11 and that fact that they would have been unconcious when they hit the deck

I've fallen off one of those rubber rings that they pull you along in by speed boat and it fucking hurts like hell when you hit the water... :)

The one I watched (the falling man) pointed out they were probably conscious. I have heard that some people faint through terror but I doubt it somehow. I do wonder what it would be like in those final moments. Does time slow down?

I think you're innacurate on several counts there Rob. For instance, any person who has any qualification in science will be aware that 80% of the atmosphere is nitrogen. Also, CO2 causes acidosis and is a poison in its own right. You're wrong on other counts too but I'll let you off. :)

Or the songs that enter your head...?

"I'm freeeeeeeeeeeee, free falling!!"

NEVER!!!

I was thinking of when either got to 100% TBH

CO2 is a poison but at 100% concentration you'll be dead of suffocation a long time before acidosis sets in

I always have time to correct students ............

Well that's just nonsense, what is killing you if there is 100% N2 is the lack of O2, true, but this could apply to absolutely any inert gas! It's harmless in itself. In general, people who die from CO2 die from acidosis, unless they have ended up in some James Bond set where the villain is killing them using some fiendish method.

Indeed - but it still kills you

I'm not seriously suggesting you use it to kill anyone - it would be easier to drop the cylinder on them - or squirt them with liquid N2 of course

I've heard drowning is canny peacful as well. I remember talking to someone about it saying it would be a pretty horific way to go and them claiming it's pretty painless. Personally, I don't want to find out.

Recently a local lady got to the beach early one morning and calmly walked in and drowned herself, left 3 kids and a husband :(

Toonraider, I hope you don't mind me saying, but you a bit depressed at the moment. Every other post is about some tragedy. Are you feeling OK? :)

Actually, i have been feeling pretty low recently :D You're right, i suppose my posts arent very cheery lately, sorry!!

I keep getting the urge to throw myself over the balcony down four flights into the lobby. I'm not suicidal, it's just so inviting when I walk past.

Have you seen that jam sketch, Suicide with a Get-Out Clause?

Aye, that's what worries me more than dying itself, the fact that I just know I'll cark it when I haven't cleaned the flat for a week and I'm still wearing yesterday's pants.

One of the pleasant consolations of death is that none of that really matters any more, though. Not to you. In the seconds before dying, there will be mortification (no pun intended), but once you've popped it, you're not going to care who sees your filthy undergarments.

I can't see me being that arsed about the state of my kegs if I suddenly felt on the verge of death. I can just see the coroner going into his dictaphone "The deceased appears to have collapsed on the landing and dragged himself through to the bedroom, finally passing in front of a chest of drawers. It is unclear exactly why he did this, although it seems reasonable to assume that he was trying to change his underwear, which to be perfectly honest is a fucking disgrace."

Well, that was just an example. But there are numerous things that I assume one would think if they knew they were about to die; stuff they should have sorted out, things they wanted to say, porn they had to delete off their PC, etc. But then once it's over, then really it's all cool. I mean, not for the people who are still alive who knew you, but personally, things are good.
