Pardew: "I'll spend wisely in the summer".

ALAN PARDEW kicked off Newcastle United’s £35million recruitment drive this weekend by insisting: “You can trust me to rebuild this club”.

The United boss and all of his key lieutenants are taking in games this weekend as the club step up scouting efforts ahead of a crucial summer transfer window.

With no match this weekend senior staff were billeted to games in the French and Dutch leagues – as well as the Championship and several big FA Cup games.

And that reflects a determination to get the right players to turn Newcastle United into a quicker, more mobile and attacking side next term.

United’s hit-list includes rising star Connor Wickham, Ivory Coast striker Gervinho and Marseille’s highly-rated left-back Taye Taiwo – but Pardew wants to make sure Newcastle have covered every base before investing.

“We have a big responsibility this summer, but I have really good confidence in my transfer record,” he told the Sunday Sun.

“This summer is going to be very, very important for this club – and it will be important for me, Graham Carr, John Carver, Peter Beardsley and the rest of the staff as well. It is so important that we bring in players that are the right fit for Newcastle United because we want to go on and have a better season next year and aim even higher.

“I’m confident that we can do that because my transfer record has been strong.

“Look at my time at West Ham and the players I bought in – I like to think I did well on that side at Crystal Palace and Reading too.”

Not sure about Taiwo mind, if there's any truth in that. I'm perfectly happy with Simpson.

Replacement for Ricky. :D

Fuck's sake, thought he was a right back for some reason. The article even states that he's a LB. I must still be intoxicated.

Look at my time at West Ham

Oh yeah the time you benched two world class players because they were foreign and played fucking Mullins instead. Well that has boosted my confidence in you no bounds mate.

If we signed those 3 players plus a few more (including an established quality striker) I'd be very happy.

Due to CT's strange inability to name/link the source of these articles, it's hard to know whether to pay any attention to such talk.

Cant' say I'm reassured about spending wisely when we're linked with the likes of Carlton Cole.

Aye according to the Sunday Mirror an offer of £10 million for some tool that's not even as good as Shola hope this does'nt happen would be a complete waste. :D

I'll be pissed if we go anywhere near Carlton Cole. 27, frequently injured and overall shit. Buying players from losing clubs can be bad as well as they can bring their losing attitude with them. So on every front I hope the Carlton Cole talk is just rubbish.

I'd sooner have us not sign any forwards than spend anywhere near 10 million on Carlton Cole.

Edit - If we were going top look at West Ham I'd sooner pickup Victor Obinna, though he's only there on loan from Inter. I'm sure they'd consider selling him as he's been on loan for a couple of seasons. Bit of a loose cannon though.

I think most, if not all, our business will be done from foreign leagues to avoid over inflated prices.12m for Zog and 10m for Cole are prime examples. If we could get Zog for 5-6m I'd take him back but wouldn't touch Cole. Obina looks decent and I wouldn't mind O Hara if we do get anyone from the prem.

Is it true he bought Carlton Cole for West Ham? If so perhaps he needs to avoid transfer buy bragging and maybe put his head down, gaze at his shoes and say nothing. I'll be highly pissed off if this club spends a penny on this lump. It's very easy to sell a good player for a lot of money and just as easy to waste the proceeds. We spent all the Gazza money on four players and still got relegated after finishing eighth the previous season.
