Espanyol report Barca over 'injured' duo

MADRID, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Espanyol are up in arms after city rivals Barcelona fielded two Spain players in the first leg of the Super Cup just three days after they had withdrawn from international duty through injury.

Centre back Carles Puyol and midfielder Xavi pulled out of Tuesday's friendly international against Iceland on the eve of the match because of minor injury niggles but then trained normally with their club and played in the Super Cup at Montjuic on Thursday.

Espanyol director Pedro Tomas said that Barca had flouted FIFA rules which state that players who withdraw from international duty through injury should not play for their clubs for at least five days.

'Before the match we sent a note to FIFA, the Spanish Federation (RFEF) and Barcelona in which we accused Barcelona of breaking the rules about the use of internationals' Tomas was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Friday.

Barcelona won the first leg 1-0, Xavi played for more than an hour and Puyol was replaced by new signing Gianluca Zambrotta six minutes from time.

Just asking, aren't we doing the same thing with Given and Duff for Ireland? Just curious, in case Wigan also complain about that :(

  2. ... being 1-0 up in the first leg of European games as a gate to big European competition.

We have 2 different case here:

    - Being 1-0 up against Zeljeznicar (Bosnia) away in 02-03, then we hammer them 4-0 at home. Here in away match we were good and comfortable and Zeljeznicar never threatened.

    - Being 1-0 up against Partizan Belgrade (S&M) away in 03-04, then we lost 0-1 at home and went to lost on penalties. Here in away match we were lucky to win, with Given and Woodgate play a part in defending that score.

So, what you guys thinkin' about this Ventspils away match? Are we more like on the first condition (Zeljeznicar) or second condition (Partizan Belgrade) in term of goal chance, possesion, scared for the home match and etc?

    Please discuss :D

  3. Gravesen is already proved a class player. With £2 million it is a bargain IMO, assume we can sell Faye to Charlton for £1.5 or 2 million. But still, if the money is needed for a more important positions (striker or full-back) then better to allocate the money for that urgent position, as we also still have Butt

  4. Barbosa

    Viera

    Venta

    Gonzalo

    Josemi

    Quique Álvarez

    José Enrique

    De la Bella

    Josico

    Somoza

    Peña

    Cani

    Bruno

    Pires

    Nihat

    José Mari

    Marcos

    Forlán

    Ordóñez

no Riquelme, Tacchinardi or Juan Pablo Sorin

Still, without those players Vilarreal is a good oponent. They still have Pires, Nihat, Jose Mari, Forlan, etc. From the result against them tomorrow I think we can look where we are right now in European degree

  5. The Ameobi jokes get tiring and repetitive after a while.

    159098

I'm not joking for the Ameobi part, I just saying that he also can score goal. And also Robert is already the past. I want to remember him for his wonderful freekicks and crossings. If you want to remember him for other things, it's up to you, I don't care :(

  6. I watched Paul Huntington earlier this season and was overly impressed with his communication skills and his ability to distribute a ball. Definitely a Woodgate type of player in terms of build and mobilty, I hope he's pushing Taylor / Bramble within the next few seasons if he is treat right by our staff.

    159095

Hopefully Huntington can push on like Taylor, and David Edgar as well for defence, and Pattison for midfield

  7. Not all of his goals were from freekicks you know!

    159096

No, but the ones that I always remember are those from beautiful free-kick. For the open-play goals, even our young Charles N'Zogbia can do that :(

... and not forget, our own Ameobi can do that as well...

  8. It wasn't his job to track back - it's like slating Shay Given for not getting enough crosses into the oppositions box. We still haven't replaced Robert with a player who can match his assists and goal ratio.

    159092

That's what I'm talking about: "those great free kicks and crossings" :(

  9. He will always remembered for those great free kicks and crossings  :o

    159081

He offered our team much more than free kicks and crosses.

    159082

And also sometimes much less, that you don't want to remember :(

    159086

    Which was?..

    159088

Lazy, doesn't want to track back and help defence, goes AWOL in the middle of the game, etc

  10. Too bad he and Morisson rejected by us. It can't be worse by having them in our team, no?

    159067

If we sigend the French striker, that would suggest we won't be signing one of these 20 goal a season players supposed to replace Shearer.

    159073

No but it would suggest a long term option on the cheap and hopefully an unearthed gem whilst still being able to afford a 20 goal a season striker.

    159083

    Agree.

If Roeder believe by signing him (if it happen) he doesn't have to sign a 20 goals a season striker anymore, then I won't keep my faith in him again
