  1. Duran was in his prime as a lightweight during Ali's era. Not sure of the other divisions then, but it seems they weren't lacking talent. I find Hearns scary to watch. His right hand was like a piston, devastating and lethal. He had a scary game-face too, the type of face that said, "You gonna die now sucka." I like Hagler a lot, it's a disgrace how the English fans treated him when he came over and battered Alan Minter.

Read that article and it rams home the decline of journalism if nothing else.

He destroyed Cuevas' would-be legacy with that right hand. Cuevas was carving out a record, at the time prior to meeting Hearns, that was on par with Duran back in the day.

Hagler, although fantastic in his own right, benefitted from Hearns moving up in weight class.

  2. RIP.

A golden era of boxing. For me, Ali was one of the greatest sportsman ever, if not the greatest, and Smokin Joe was the only fighter who gave him a run for his money in his prime.

Foreman, in his prime, should've handled Ali. He was a destroyer, but lacked heart. The other golden period for me, was the era of the four great middleweights ie. Leonard, Hagler, Hearns and Duran. Hearns was my favourite out of those four - the best boxer of the four, his conditioning & his physical build let him down in the later rounds against Leonard. He had the measure of Leonard on two occasions.

  3. When a 'secret' fishing spot (to the locals) falls prey to zip-eyed fishing gangs. Shellfish are particularly high in demand with this lot ie. fresh & salt water crays, mussels, scallops, oysters and abalone. The locals respect the stock numbers, we release juvenile and female crayfish in particular. Whereas the Asian raiders, and they buzz around in large groups, will rape a spot on a daily basis before moving to their destination on their hit-list. Nothing worse than treking down to a water estuary, with a mate and a few beers, only to hear scattered Gook-speak on arrival.

  4. Good manager. I don't get why everyone on here seems to hate him so much. He seems alright to me. Deserves a crack at the England job.

Lol at the op. I forgot about that weirdo pole. I wonder if he fucked off to the same place as CT and deano

Quality poster. Probably broke that place's transfer record. Definitely a trophy signing.

  5. Doumbia' scored 50 in 64 games for Young Boys and 27 in 38 for CSKA, I know theyre not the best leagues but those stats are phenomenal for a striker and alots being made of his ability to cut it at the top level from what I've heard

Although i'd definitely have Bassong back now, I meant Bassong type signing where we sign a young, cheap CB who provides cover for us and look to break the team in the next few seasons

ie. Situ, the Summer window trialist.

He seemed to meet the criteria, and going by some match reports sounded like a very interesting prospect. I wonder if the the club's everpresent pursuit for the 'perfect deal', financially, was the roadblock that prevented that move from going through.

  6. The attempted re-introduction of paedos back into society, and the few civil libertarians who argue in favour of. I mean rehabilitive activities such as supervised trips to places such as shopping centres, supervised & monitored housing within a stone's drop of schools etc. They've become an experiment, to justify the wage packets of those psychology geniuses in government departments.

A bullet to the head is the only cure - or preventative measure - for their condition/sexual preference.

Maudsley's actions, particularly behind bars prior to being placed in solitary confinement, were appropriate. And he saved the tax paying community millions in wasted funds too.

  7. Written prior to last nights game, but still a canny read....

    UNBEATOON!

My title says it all... who would have thought that the Magpies would be flying sky high following an excellent start to the season.

Yes my little FanZone fanatics, the mighty black and white's are the North East's number one and currently "Unbeatoon" in the Premier League. The Geordie's are currently higher than Mike Ashley'sspacer.gif calorie count :lol and long may it continue!

As I type on my black and white laptop, the Toon Army are a fantastic fourth in the Premier League and following Chelsea'sspacer.gif hammering at the weekend we could even go into third place if we get points at Stoke this evening. Our existing position is a fantastic one that will surprise many Toon fans and Dazza included!

Apart from the recent lunacy of Nile "Power" Ranger being in the news for the wrong reasons, it's extremely refreshing to have Newcastle Unitedspacer.gif in the news for matters on the pitch rather than off it, even though the media still don't seem to be forthcoming in giving Newcastle praise, even when it is due. It is not as if we are a club with a reputation for constantly being in the public eye (cough)

It is great to see us doing so well and see the likes of Man Utd get thumped by their noisy neighbours, Chelsea getting beat by new boys Queens Park Strangers and have to defend their Captain against allegations and Man City involved in legal proceedings with their own players. Being a Newcastle fan is good at the moment, but we have a difficult run of games ahead of us and the next month or so will really determine how strong we really are.

Let's face facts, Alan Pardewspacer.gif was not a fans' favourite when he became our new manager, mainly due to the nature of Chris Hughton'sspacer.gif departure, but Pardew has to be treated on his results and who can argue with those? Whilst not liked at the time, the sale of Andy Carroll, spacer.gif Kevin Nolan, spacer.gif Jose Enriquespacer.gif and Joey Bartonspacer.gif are now distant memories and have not affected results, but now appear to have been pushed to the back of many fans minds.

So the question I ask, are Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew winning the battle for respect at SJP? Many will say no, never, but I think the majority of fans have to look at what's been done to the club both financially and on the pitch and agree that we are in a much healthier position.

Don't get me wrong I am not a deluded fan saying that we have a Premiership winning squad or will be in next year's Champions League as that simply isn't the case, but you have to look at the start we have made with the players that we now have and I am more than confident that we will end the season with a Top 10 finish.

Let us not forget that life on the Newcastle United rollercoaster is always eventful and let's hope the highs continue a while longer before the next inevitable stomach churning low.

And now for Dazza's regular Fanzone rant....

    1. Regarding the new Sports Direct signage and renaming at St James Park... get over it, it's a sign for god's sake, Wigan's stadium is named after their owner, so what? Our stadium will always be called SJP regardless, end of.

    2. Nile Ranger, give your head a shake mate. Stop feeling sorry for yourself with your "Life ain't fare" comment on Twitter. First of all learn to spell properly and more importantly act like the "professional" your paid to be. You're a role model to kids, so please act like one.

    3. On the subject of Twitter, great to see Joey Barton already pulling his new club apart. I was sorry to see a good player leave us but not his outspoken comments. Barton is paid to be a footballer not a commentator, great player but a total liability, good luck with that one Mr Warnock, I hope you realise what you have taken on.

    4. Great to hear the reduction in Season Ticket prices for the remainder of the season, a good move to reward fans loyalty, and for families... about blooming time!

Let's hope we can continue our good form and maintain ourselves as the North East's number one, whilst our secret weapon "Agent Bruce" continues his ongoing mission to ridicule and bring destruction to Sunderland.

As always please send me your views good bad or indifferent on my blog. You can also comment with your thoughts good on Twitter via @Fanzone or follow me via @DazWilliams.

Watch out Premier League, the future is bright, the future is Black and White....TOON ARMY!!!

....... but Whelan, over the years, has been a wonderful backer of sport itself, in Wigan. From football to rugby league.

His vision & endeavor, in a smaller market, rivalled SJH.

  8. A post-Allardyce management appointment is one of the toughest gigs in the game. Footballers need to be re-educated as to how to play the game. This makes our late-season turnaround under Keegan look even more impressive. Stability under Allardyce can also be rephrased in one word, inertia. He's incapable of change, and unlike several old-stagers (like Ferguson) he's incapable of reinventing his approach in accordance to game's trends of the day. An Allardyce team will more often than not survive the drop, but they won't progress either. And his football philosophy is a massive bodyblow for any club's youth development department, he otherwise undoes the good work performed at the technical base of a youngster's football education.

And if they 'play football', or express themselves, they cop it from the king of anti-football as well ie. the verbal dressing downs given to Enrique, when the said defender naturally adhered to his instinctive ball-playing traits. All Allardyce wanted, in Enrique, was a defensive bruiser to match his namesake back in Spain. On a similar note for Okocha and Djorkaeff, at the sunset stage of their respective careers, playing under Big Sam must have been quite a football culture shock.

  9. Jonas & Santon as the right-side combination, with Marveaux out on the left (in front of Raylor or Ferguson, preferably a notable January addition).

This is the brave move, for more fluid build-up play (and Jonas attacking the bylines on his preferred boot interests me more), and offers more long-term potential..... at least until either of the two are sold.

  10. If he can maintain his current level of performance/strikerate it will be tough ask for Ashley & Llambarse to play 'hardball' in negotiations, and get Maiga (still under contract for a while yet) for this reported 7m figure.

Sochaux would be mad to prematurely agree to such a deal. There's plenty of time, until the opening of the window, for other suitors to pop up over the course of the season. As was the case with our other notable & long-term target ie. Gervinho. A good sized striker, with pace & strength: it's hard to imagine there won't be other clubs putting out their feelers, particularly if the form-line continues.

    Drogba was another late-bloomer.

  11. A zip-eyed businessman walked into the currency exchange in New York City with 20000 yen, and walked out with 720 dollars. The following week, he walked in with the same amount, but only received 660 dollars. He then asked the teller why he received less money this week, compared to last week. The teller replied simply ,"fluctuations". The zip-eyed businessman then stormed out, and just before slamming the door, turned around and shouted "Fluc you Amelicans too!".

An old Jewish women was walking her grandson down the beach when a huge appeared from nowhere and swept the little boy out to sea. The old women shook her fist and cursed God for 20 minutes, for taking her only grandson. Finally God couldn't stand the irritating cow anymore and he sent another wave, promptly delivering the little boy back, gently & unharmed at her feet. After a quick search of the boy she shook her fist at the sky and shrieked ,"He had 50 cents in his pocket when you took him!"

  12. Year Zero, that's paying a little too much heed to the few moments of quality we've seen from Sam Ameobi. He scored that wonderful goal and has been dangerous another time when used off the bench, but he's also been wasteful off the bench once. All in all it's very limited minutes some coming against tired opposition where a player with running in his legs will naturally make inroads - how many times did we see Routledge terrorise opposing teams for a few minutes?

Routlege was lightweight, there was always going to be a question mark as to whether he could hurt the opposition during the early phases of the game, where there is more physicality and a more conscious effort to close down attacking space. It's what hampered his progress at Spurs, and that was part of the price of admission when we were looking for a basement bargain addition for the right flank, who could consistently step-up in a higher grade of competition.

Looking at his strengths/Sam (ie. where he has the attacking attributes - on the ball - and likes to play deeper with the workrate to match) it's the ideal opportunity/time to 'blood' him, to integrate him into the 1st team. I know he was only on loan at the time, but I thought Dalglish played a very conservative line with a then young & raw Saha (limited minutes, before judging that he wasn't worth the quoted fee) who displayed similar raw potential (ie. quick & strong on the ball, good ball striking/shooting ability). I'd rather blood 'raw potential' then stick with aging and 'proven shite', that's what the youth set-up is for.

Pretty sure Sammy wasn't fit/was injured for the Spurs match.

Decided to give him an extra couple of days to get fit which meant he could play for the reserves last night.

So i take it, purely on face value, there has also been a fitness doubt (prior to the Spurs match, by a couple of hit-outs) when Shola has been Pardew's preferred '2nd half impact sub'. For the sake of blooding him, he should've been the favoured striking option (over Loven at least) in our most recent cup tie. The club sneaking deep through a cup draw, seems to be Pardew's best shot at winning anything under the current regime, hence he is leaning towards a more experienced first eleven.

  13. Another 'bolt from the blue' moment delivered by Shola.

Quality left-foot finish, as was the one at Anfield in the season closer of 03/04.

Looking at the bigger picture though, and reflecting on Pardew's current striking pecking order (where Sammi O isn't coming into calculation, despite performing at a superior level, compared to Shola & Loven, when given the chance), it's another random moment produced within another spell of non-performance. Going beyond the issue of favouring 'experience', which imo is Pardew's current criteria re- the striking line-up, and looking at it from a 'performance & trust' angle, Shola has just been given another stay of execution. However the collateral damage being the continued non-blooding of a very promising prospect, in the form of the younger Ameobi.

Pardew is playing a dangerous game on this tbh. There's a fine line between giving a lad (with bags of ability) a taste of the big-time before putting them on the back-burner & making them hungrier, and actually demotivating them (particularly when there's non-perfoming shite like the aforementioned ahead of them in the pecking order) where there progress at the club (to established 1st teamer) amounts to a limbo state, courtesy of lengthy stints in the reserve grade & eventual loan spells.

That one bobbled about 20 times before hitting the inside of the post though, this one was as good if not better than my favourite Shola goal, against Chelsea when he rolled John Terry at wor end.

His movement in the build-up, coupled with the pressure situation of the day, was an indicator there was something there/to build on. As i've always maintained he's been a poor student of the game, when he has some great exponents of 'box play' to learn from over the years.

No doubt we'll be able to reflect on our favourite Shola Moments, as few & far between as they have been, when the testimonial hit-out comes around.

  14. YZ, am not your biggest fan but thats one of your worst posts on here. Shite from start to finish.

Evidently...... and given that you've placed that out into the public domain, it's appropriate for me to say that i couldn't give two shits.

  15. Year Zero, that's paying a little too much heed to the few moments of quality we've seen from Sam Ameobi. 16. Hope we can sort a deal out like. Too common to hear these words rattle inside and empty can when it comes to the crunch and the players (or his agent) want more money. If we believe what we are told with what he is on now, plus what he has said here, you'd think it a formality unless the club plays funny buggers and tries to drop his wage etc.

Yup, rhetoric is nice to hear, but in these times I want names on dotted lines. Even then, I won't be convinced, such is the value of a "contract"

    .

    Bosman is a cunt

Arguably the worst thing to have happened to the 'club football' landscape. The 'old' compensation system was fine, and a shame that a 'nothing player' (ability wise) and the actions of a 'nothing club' were the catalysts behind that change.
