  1. http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5324880,00.html

The Danish defender, who has not played since January, has announced that he will be retiring from football with immediate effect.

He has been plagued by knee problems for many years and the latest setback left him facing a decision about whether to carry on.

Laursen could have undergone another major operation - this time on his right knee - in an attempt to return to action but he has instead opted to hang up his boots.

The 31-year-old's retirement will leave a huge void to fill in the Villa defence as he has been one of the club's most consistent performers in recent seasons.

He moved to Villa Park from AC Milan in 2004 and went on to establish himself as one of the strongest centre-backs in the Premier League.

Laursen has had to endure many spells on the sidelines but it was hoped earlier this season he had finally overcome his problems.

A series of excellent performances helped Villa mount a challenge for a UEFA Champions League spot before he was struck down again.

Martin O'Neill's men have struggled to keep as many clean sheets in Laursen's absence and will finish either fifth or sixth in the league.

Laursen, who made 53 appearances for Denmark before retiring from international football earlier this year, also spent time with homeland club Silkeborg and Italian sides Hellas Verona and Parma earlier in his career.

Shame, was playing well before his injury.

  2. duff didn't look too bad at left back. bearing in mind enriques prob out for the season, i reckon he could do a job for us.

he's lost a load of pace mind. and his confidence is clearly shot.

    my top 3 are

Rtaylor. shit footballer. no confidence when playing for us.

    Staylor. simply not good enough.

Viduka. how much do we pay him. and for what.

    honorable mentions go to

Owen. it could have been so different had he not had that injury.

colocinni. not a premiership player. too slow at this level.

martins. a sprinter that has 2 tricks and can kick the ball very hard but completely innacurately. not a footballer.

barton. jailbait. good player if the mood takes him.

smith. fucking awful player that doesn't know his best position.

We didn't sign Staylor, came through the academy, but I agree he isnt good enough.

    EDIT:

    3 Best:

    Bass

    Beye

    Jonas/Enrique

    3 Worst:

    Nolan

Ryan Taylor (even for any amount of money, he is gash.)

    Colo

Honourable mention to Nacho I suppose for playing 20 minutes or so then getting injured. Are we still paying his wages ffs?

  3. Butt: 8/10 MOTM for us. Constantly battled in midfield, was always at the thick of the action and his passing was better.

What match were you watching? Were you there? Butt was woeful.....passing poor, slow, miss timing tackles and movement none existent. Our worst player on the pitch by a country mile.

Erm WERE YOU THERE? Butt the worst player on the pitch  fucking joker man.

  4. The fact we created some actual chances for a change and we didn't convert them has really annoyed me. Owen said if he got a chance he'd score and missed probably the best chance of the game.

Harper: 5/10 - Quicker distribution and made some decent punches but never looks comfortable.

Beye: 7/10 - Got out once or twice but apart from that was his usual solid self.

Bassong: 7/10 - Cool and calm at the back as ever.

Colo: 6/10 Better than usual but still shaky.

Smith: 5/10 Put in some good challenges but most of the time didn't look interested and was lazy.

Butt: 8/10 MOTM for us. Constantly battled in midfield, was always at the thick of the action and his passing was better.

Duff: 6/10 Not many complaints but was caught out once too often from Pennant.

Owen: 6/10 Was his usual self, dropping deep. Missed a golden chance.

Martins: 5/10 Showed his pace but didn't deliver the goods. Shoved off the ball too easy and missed a sitter.

Viduka: 7/10 Best striker for us today, held the ball up great and played people in to play with nice flicks. Shame he cant play more than sixty minutes.

    Subs

Guthrie: 4/10 Really had a bad game. His passing was off and was caught in possesion more than once.

Carroll: 6/10 Chased the ball but was ineffectual.

Guti: 6/10 Dont understand how he gets dropped to the bench but Smith manages to get on. Always making runs.

  5. The spuds fans actually got something spot on this afternoon. Ryan taylor played an awfull ball (I think it may have actually supposed to have been for Owen) and they started singing That's why your going down. And taking all of the off the field stuff to one side, that's spot on. We are going down because we don't have a single player who can pass a ball. And how can we expect anyhing from a poacher like Owen if we can't play simple passes and create anything for him.

It would be great if he were the type of playe who could create for himself but he's not and certainly hasn't been ever since he lost his pace.

Keegan realised last season that with a 4-4-2 our players cannot create enough chances for him and went with him Martins and Viduka up front. Shearer seems to have picked up on this too but Martin's injury has prevented him from trying it until the second half today. Hopefully he will stick with it for the rest of the games.

    Spot on.
