NEWCASTLE UNITED entertain lowly West Ham desperate to regain some pride after Wednesday night's 1-5 humbling by Steve Bruce's Championship leaders Birmingham in the third round replay - their biggest home defeat in the FA Cup since 1914 and second heaviest ever on home turf in the competition.

The busiest of all Premiership clubs go into their 39th match of the season against one of manager Glenn Roeder's former clubs, in search of a ninth Premiership victory which could see them in the top half of the table, having been languishing in the relegation zone just over two months ago.

The Magpies are unbeaten in six Premiership games against West Ham. They've won four and drawn two and are bidding to make it three wins in a row against the east Londoners. The Tyneside club are also aiming to 'double' the Hammers for the third time in the Premier League, and first since the 1994-95 season. That possibility was teed up by a 0-2 victory at Upton Park in September when Damien Duff and Obafemi Martins both scored their first goals for the Magpies.

WEST HAM UNITED make the 280-mile journey to St James' for the 450th Premier League match in their history, seeking a first away win of the campaign. The east Londoners followed the 0-6 trouncing from Reading by sharing six goals with Fulham last time out. They're three points behind fourth bottom Wigan, and in desperate need of a second League victory under Alan Curbishley. But they could face the backlash of the Magpies' Cup upset.

The Upton Park club have not scored in nine successive away games in the Premiership, or 888 minutes (14 hours 48 minutes) of top flight soccer on the road since Bobby Zamora netted in the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on 26 August. Indeed Zamora has scored all two of West Ham's away League goals this season. But he will not be adding to that tally in this game, as he's suspended.

The Hammers have not beaten Newcastle since a 3-0 home win on 23 September 2001. Their most recent maximum at St James' was 0-3 on 31 October 1998, when Ian Wright got a brace.

SEQUENCES/RECENT FORM

NEWCASTLE UNITED 11th 29 points

Highest realistically achievable after Saturday's matches: 8th

Lowest could fall: 15th

1. Won one of the last six in all competitions.

2. Won one of four Premiership matches (2-3 at Tottenham on 14 January in their last League fixture).

3. One of three clubs with just four Premiership clean sheets this season. The others are West Ham and Spurs.

4. Conceded more goals than any other club in the quarter-hours before and after half time of Premiership games this term - 17.

5. Lost the lead nine times in top tier encounters this term, and effectively dropped 15 points from matches in which they were in a winning position. Drawn three (home to Everton and Manchester United, and away to Arsenal) and lost three (home to Fulham, and home and away to Bolton) in which they held the lead. Sheffield United also have a similiar record.

6. Undefeated in five home League games. Won four and drawn one at St James', since losing 0-1 to Sheffield United on 4 November.

7. Another home fixture, against Aston Villa follows this, before a trip to Fulham and a home clash with Liverpool. Then it's Uefa Cup action in Belgium, away to Zulte-Waregem.

WEST HAM UNITED 18th 19 points

Highest realistically achievable after Saturday's matches: 18th

Lowest could fall: 19th

1. Picked up two points from a last possible 15 since the 1-0 home win over Manchester United on Alan Curbishley's debut as manager on 17 December.

2. Won two, drawn two and lost three under Curbishley. Only one of those games was not in the Premiership - the 3-0 win at Brighton in the FA Cup.

3. Lost 14 times in this Premiership season. Only Charlton have fared less well - 15 defeats.

4. Scored just 15 Premiership goals - only Watford's attack is less effective (12 goals).

5. Conceded the opening goal on more occasions than any other club in the highest League. Won one (home to Charlton), drawn three and lost 13 of the 17 matches in which the opposition has taken the initial lead.

6. Failed to score in more top flight games than any other club so far this season - 13.

7. Not won in 11 away Premiership games.

8. This is the club's 225th Premiership match on the road. Of the previous 224, 50 have been won and one more goal is needed to be scored to total 200 away from home in this League.

9. A home tie against Watford in the FA Cup follows this, before Liverpool visit Upton Park in the Premiership. After that comes an away fixture at Aston Villa, and the home League clash with Watford.
