  1. Noellie, let's say 2 teams have played 38 matches each. One team has 44 points, and the other has 40 points. It doesn't matter if you take the total number of points, or average number of points, the order that the teams come in will be the same. However, if the one team has played 38 matches, and the other has played 35 matches, then the total number of points is an unfair way of judging them, because the one who has played 38 matches will have an advantage over the one who has played 35 matches. That's when we prefer to use averages. Because with averages, it doesn't matter who has played the most matches, it's completely fair between the teams. You find the average by dividing the total by the number of matches, eg. 4 points in 2 matches, comes to an average of 2.
  2. I'm not a WUM. I see that if people can't stand it if you have unusual philosophies. And if people can't take light-hearted banter AFTER they've been thoroughly rude, then that's there lookout. Moderators, ban me if you like, I don't see the point in writing on a forum, if you can't say what you think.
  3. Basically, fuck off you utter plank. acrossthepond, do you play the trombone? LOL LOL LOL
  4. Premier League matches 2010-2011 Hughton 1.19 points per match (16 league matches) Pardew 1.22 points per match (18 league matches) It's getting closer. (for what it's worth, this stat)
  5. Just because all the other clubs are paying stupid money to players, doesn't mean our club should. It is ALWAYS acceptable to refuse to pay 20,000 a week to a player, in my view.
  6. I don't want oil sheikhs from countries with barbaric laws to own Newcastle, but I'll still support the team if they take over. And knuckle-dragging comments just because people don't agree, aren't going to stop me from voicing my opinion.
  7. Kitman, No one would play for it? I don't agree about that. And I would keep supporting the Toon if someone like City's owners came and bought us, but I'd be happier winning the Carling Cup with Ashley (who understands more about Geordie culture than they do, and has a financial policy I approve of) than winning the Champions League under them.
  8. I don't want the club I support to pay more than it can afford, ever, no matter what trophies we can buy with debt. I am against what I, and many others, call financial doping. As far as I'm concerned it's cheating. No wonder players earn so much money these days, when clubs act irresponsibly. If a player who is already earning 20,000 a week, no matter how good he is, asks for more money, my answer would always be, 'No, and if you insist on more money, then find another club. willing to pay it'
  9. Kitman, exceeding what you spend is what makes happiness. Burnley and Fulham did in 2008-09, and Fulham did again in 2009-2010 and their fans were absolutely delirous. And look at Chelsea! They won the league last season, but how mooted was their celebrations??? I bet even Abramovich wasn't expecting his band of worshippers to become blazé, THAT quickly!
  10. These are the 6 players, with only Waddle not being London-based. 1991-92... Gary Lineker (Tottenham) 1992-93... Chris Waddle (Sheff Wednesday, so not London) 1994-95... Jurgen Klinsmann (Tottenham) 1996-97... Gianfranco Zola (Chelsea) 1998-99... David Ginola (Tottenham) 2010-11... Scott Parker (West Ham)
  11. chezGiven, I have no proof that signing Tiote was not luck, you have no proof that it was. citizenerased, The signing of Shearer was so expensive that it ended up necessetitating the sale of Ferdinand and Ginola, and thus bye-bye any chance of the title. Especially given that Shearer was injured that summer, and would never be the same player again. Shearer would end up costing us far far too much in wages, especially considering that after 1997 he was no longer world-class, but just a very good goal-scorer. In the last 2 years we have acted like a very sensible club, focusing on frugality and the repayment of debts, while at the same time soaring back up, and with a greatly reduced wage bill. I see no pleasure in doing well, if you're going to get into great financial trouble because of it.
  12. I don't doubt that Parker has been supber this season. But did Ginola have to go from taking Newcastle to 2nd place to taking Tottenham to mid-table to finally get his Football Writers' Player of the Year Award? I think you're right that the journoes are strongly favouring players who ply their trade a stone's throw from their offices, and surely this demeans the whole award.
  13. I think this statistic diminishes the credibility of the journalists. How can they serious be so Lonodonocentric?
  14. Hmmm. That first sentence indicates that you are not so certain that it was just luck. Yet later, you say 'hence, it's luck'. Well, we'll have to agree to differ, but I don't think there is any proof that the signing of Tiote, and his subsequent quality, is all about luck. You've given your evidence, and as far as I can see, it looks flimsy to me.
  15. Our relegation season (2008-09) KEEGAN 3matches /4points // 1.33 points per match[/u] KINNEAR 18 matches /20points / 1.11 points per match SHEARER 8matches / 5points / 0.63points per match HUGHTON 9matches / 5points / 0.56 points per match So Hughton actually had the poorest record per match, although some would give him the away match at WBA (I wouldn't, as Kinnear was only taken ill just before the match). My conclusion is this: Hughton only had 9 matches, he was almost as good as Shearer, and he is still an excellent manager. But for all Ashley may have done wrong sacking him, Ashley showed loyalty to Hughton when he gave him another chance after the relegation season. Ashley's loyalty gave Hughton the chance to show himself as the excellent manager which I think he is. So Ashley shouldn't perhaps be seen as the pantomime villain of Hughton's life.
  16. Premier League matches 2010-2011 Hughton 1.19 points per match (16 league matches) Pardew 1.24 points per match (17 league matches) Pardew in front, but it's quite even. (for what it's worth, this stat)
  17. Phil, sacking Hughton was a mistake in my opinion, and the one sad point in these last 2 seasons. ChezGiven how come the Tiote signing was just luck? If it had been Ferguson who bought him, everyone would be gushing at Ferguson's genius. How on earth do you know that whoever spotted Tiote on behalf of the Toon didn't know he was good from seeing him??? Over to you.
  18. No, I don't mean lucky at all. 1... We seem to have a policy of never holding on to any player who wants to leave. (I agree with that policy) 2... Never kow-towing to players who want to have their already ridiculously high wages raised. 3... Finding out which relatively unknown players are also very good, and buying them for cheaper sums. (Leon Best). In 1995-97 we finished 2nd twice, and we were in the top 3, when it comes to investing in players. Now, we are higher up in the league than plenty of clubs who have spent far more money than we have, eg. Sunderland and Villa.
  19. I thought people would want to talk about Newcastle United, on a Newcastle United forum. Oh well, when someone does, I'll respond.
  20. Buying Owen was the worst bit of business done by any football club anywhere. 17 million for him, plus 20 million in wages. Utterly shambolic! Thank goodness he left us. Oh, and having him on the pitch was like having 10 men on the pitch.
  21. If we stopped thinking about football in terms of seasons, and spoke of season pairs then 2009-2011 has been the most enjoyable season pair I have ever experienced, and that includes 1995-1997. In the Summer of 2009, people throughout Britain were gloating at the Toon. The next 2 years told the gloaters a thing or two. Absolutely wonderful. If we beat Blackppol tomorrow, then I'll begin to feel that celebration feeling for an extraordinary season back in the Prem, after having reduced the wage bill considerably, and been so shrewd in the transfer market.
