  1. I'm having a cataract removed today - I was diagnosed with them in both eyes two years ago but one needed doing so I got it done  and the other was "as and when" but I noticed  my vision was getting a bit worse in that eye since the start of winter.

    he doesn't, does he? :jesuswept:

He did it a couple of times when he first started on MOTD but I think he was called out for it and I haven't noticed him doing it for quite a while.

i always thought of city as the blues until i moved down south and things got confusing.

to be fair it only really got confusing when abramovich turned up. before that you i hadn't met any chelsea blues 😏

you're right about one club cities though. Leicester are just Leicester. Southampton, Portsmouth, etc. weird there's no club prefixed London. Presumeably Sunderland are just Sunderland but i'm sure you can correct me if they have other nicknames🤐

for you guys i've always heard the toon, geordies, barcodes, sometimes newcastle. i'd never knowingly heard you called united until i came here. although maybe in the odd commentary. no idea if any of those nicknames are taboo.

We are a true United though - formed by the amalgamation of Newcastle West End who had the ground and Newcastle East End who had the better team/setup.

    Fair enough.

Can I just ask a purely pragmatic question? If Labour were pro rejoining, and won at the GE, do you think we could simply rejoin?

Im sure you know I am as pro-EU as they come - if you look back into deep history on here you'll see I was positive about the EU long before UKIP even existed. I had the EU flag as part of my profile. But I recognise its gone for 10, more likely 20 or 30 more years. The EU will not countenance us rejoining until the eurosceptic movement is utterly vanquished. May well not happen in my lifetime.

But closer alignment with the EU is definitely going to happen under Labour, the process of reconciliation will begin the day after the GE. Apart from anything else, it's the lowest hanging economic fruit available. But it's not a manifesto issue for this GE for any party, including reform and the LDs. So basing your vote on it makes little sense to me. Being pragmatic again, Labour is simply your best option and on this issue you have no representation.

They won't countenance closer alignment with the EU as long as their focus groups of cunts tell them they don't want it.

I remember ket being used as a word for sweets.

this was long before the popularity of horse tranquilliser.

I would say ket/kets for sweets is more strongly Mackem than the other things mentioned.

  6. I didn't hear it much growing up but I remember my Mam using it occasionally.

We used to drink in the old Black and White pub for a spell, probably in the late 80s and I rember overhearing the owner describing some bother there'd been when we weren't in - he said it kicked off when someone ordered a round and ended the order with "marra" and one of the regulars had shouted "Mackem" and chinned him.

I think now it's a good piss take considering how much they use it on RTG.

I also agree with HMHM about haway/howay - I think that's a manufactured wedge thing.

Interesting. Do you not think this helps explains Starmer's ultra-cautious approach and beige policies? If Raynor is an example of the mud they've got to fling, they're fucked. In addition, these polls do not take into account the likelihood the Sun will flip for Labour when Murdoch realises he will definitely be on the losing side, as I expect it will. I don't think they take into account tactical voting either (might be wrong on that).

To an extent, yes (on the cautious approach) but I think there are "positive" votes to be had as well which they may not get.

One of the biggest attacks on Starmer will be the Savile thing which no amount of caution or reason will appease.

For people who like graphs like I do, the latest IPSOS polling is existential for the tories, predicting them down to 19% and 37 seats, behind the Lib Dems on 49 who would be the official opposition. Somehow Sunak is now less popular than Liz Truss ever was, quite the achievement.

People say it won't happen. Why won't it? How is it going to get better for the tories?

I think some Tory "defectors" will be frightened back on board with a vicious election campaign.

  9. I watched a local youtuber's take on this which made sense (Arena site development already started so not an option etc) and he reckoned the problem with Castle Leazes was some student accommodation blocks which are being demolished and replaced with an expanded scope which made it a non-starter.

His conclusion was rebuild SJP post Euros but his suggestion of moving to a temporarily expanded Gateshead stadium during the build made it unlikely imo.

Aye. The tory member blokes fancy her (decent rack tbf) and the ladies think she looks like Thatcher.

    Also not being brown.

  11. When the ICJ case gave their verdict, they accused the UNWRA of being Hamas to deflect the story by using torture and lies.

Now the cowards in the west have "noticed" the extent of their bloodlust that's been there in their words and deeds since the outset, they've provoked Iran to deflect again and have the nerve to cite international law and go crawling to the UN who they literally accused of being Hamas a couple of months ago.

It's sad there are horrible people willing to react when poked but it should be clear who the worst of the lot are.
