Sam Speaks: Owen Blow Came At Bad Time

By Craig Hope

SAM Allardyce is facing up to the prospect of being without Michael Owen for the bulk of the seven-game December period and admits that he felt the striker was nearing a return to his best before being struck down by injury.

The 27-year-old hobbled from play at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on Friday night having torn a thigh muscle after just 34 minutes of England's 1-0 friendly victory over Austria.

And, with Owen due back on Tyneside early this week before beginning his rehabilitation programme, Big Sam has spoken of his frustration at this latest setback given the striker's recent progress following a start to the season disrupted by niggling injuries.

"It's a big blow for ourselves and Michael when we felt we were moving in the right direction by him training and being available to play every week," the Toon boss told Newcastle World TV in an exclusive interview.

"We were looking to up the match sharpness and fitness but he's been dealt this severe blow yet again.

"From our point of view we just have to manage it as quickly as we possibly can to find the best treatment possible.

"We want to bring that recovery period forward as much as we can.

"But, at the moment, it's looking like around six weeks and we don't want to predict any less than that."

Germany Calls For Striker

NEWCASTLE United have sent Michael Owen to see German specialist Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller Wohlfahrt following the thigh injury he sustained on England duty on Friday.

Magpies boss Sam Allardyce fears he could be without the club's record signing for up to six weeks after his latest misfortune.

Sam said: "We have sent Michael to Germany to see Dr Wohlfahrt in a bid to speed up his recovery from his thigh injury.

"But at the moment we do not see the point in changing our view that we will be without Michael for between six and four weeks.

"If we start talking about him coming back earlier there will be disappointment if he does not. However, if we can get him back quicker it will be a big bonus for everyone."

He must have a holiday home there or something!
