Fans want Shearer as next Blackburn boss, says Lancashire Telegraph poll

In a special poll conducted on the Lancashire Telegraph website, Shearer was the fans' overwhelming favourite to succeed Mark Hughes in the Ewood Park hot-seat.

The former Rovers striker, who bagged 130 goals for the club in 171 appearances, polled a whopping 46 per cent of the vote - nearly three times as much as his nearest challenger Paul Ince.

Nearly a thousand people took part in the poll and Shearer got almost as many votes as the rest of the candidates put together.

Only 13 per cent wanted the former Newcastle and Bolton manager Sam Allardyce, and just three per cent would welcome the appointment of Steve McClaren, who has been out of work since he got sacked by England last year.

Some believe Shearer, working alongside a more experienced number two like Mike Newell, could prove to be the dream ticket', and the Lancashire Telegraph understands the former Rovers number nine WOULD consider the possibility.

Shearer has made no secret of his desire to become a manager one day and, after missing out on a dream return to Newcastle earlier this year, he may see the vacancy at Rovers as an attractive first job opportunity.

Chairman John Williams has already started the search for Hughes' replacement after the Welshman's move to Manchester City was officially confirmed yesterday, and he said the board would be 'open to all possibilities', which means Shearer's lack of previous managerial experience would not necessarily count against him.

Allardyce and McClaren are also definitely interested, although the latter is also eyeing a move to the Dutch club FC Twente.

Williams is refusing to be drawn into discussing specific individuals at this stage, but he did say the club has an idea of which direction they want to go in'.
